Yeah the screen is gonna be comically small but I don’t reckon the text will be unreadable. I mean the text in those Game Gear games were already hueg like xbox.

The way forum software shrinks to fit means this shot was accurate size on my iphone SE.
Wow I do not want to read on something that small!
Gonna get one of those magnifying glasses on an arm that clamps to your desk so I can play one of these adorably little Game Gears
Here’s hoping they release slightly bigger versions. I’d love to have a red GameGear that actually served a practical purpose rather than being something I’d buy and probably never use because it’s tiny and I have other alternatives for playing GameGear games that’s all-around more comfortable.
If they released these in the U.S. with translations for the previously-unreleased games here, then I’d probably buy one just to support bringing over old games officially.
GAME GEAR MICRO XL
what i want most, in terms of game gearalia, is just a modern game gear, maybe a little smaller than the original, with a decentish screen, a functioning cartridge slot, and a usb-chargable battery.
sucks that none of the chinese console cloner companies have done one yet, or maybe columbus circle
I have confused feelings about the Game Gear Micro.
I had a Game Gear as a kid, so I have nostalgic feels for this.
It looks cute. It doesn’t look great. I’m disappointed it doesn’t look great.
I’m still tempted to get one.
There’s a white one with green buttons that comes with five Aleste titles
It is difficult to get. You can only get it as part of the Aleste Collection Limited Edition, the pre-orders for which sold old instantly. It comes with a white Big Window, theoretically making it the cheapest way to get a Game Gear Micro and the Big Window magnifier.
I’ll wait and see if the white one becomes more attainable (I don’t think it will), if it does I’ll probably get it, and if it doesn’t then I might get a black one.
Something I’ve noticed is that Japanese sites seem to mention you can play it via Micro-USB or AAA batteries. I don’t think these have internal batteries. I don’t get the feeling English language sites have all noticed this, as some of them talk about it being chargeable by Micro-USB and that doesn’t seem to be the case. I think you have to keep it plugged in to play it with the Micro-USB. If these have an internal battery at all I will be pleasantly surprised.
This looks like something that just barely misses the mark from being something I’d be really into. I genuinely would like for there to be a Game Gear Micro XL. If they made a slightly bigger one, with an internal battery, a moderately bigger screen, and didn’t divvy up the games between the different colors this could be my new favorite handheld instead of a silly cute novelty one.
The Game Boy Micro was one of my favorite handhelds and I really haven’t seen anything else come out that was similar. Unfortunately, in its current form the Game Gear Micro isn’t similar either.
Yeah, there is 100% no internal rechargable battery. They run off 2 AAAs OR a contant micro USB power source. you could rig it with an external USB battery source as a solution I suppose.
I hope against hope that it’s accurate and only lasts 2-3 hours on a set of batteries
this seems generous based on my history with the game gear
This thing only exists to be used for 5 minutes and then immediately put on a shelf forever. It is meant to be ornemental despite its semblance of a function. It is the gamer dad equivalent of an antique gaudy plate
I’m very okay with the fact that I sometimes buy and use things that most people buy to put on shelves. As someone who likes old comics, old video-games and old camera lenses I had to make peace with that a long time ago.
Put some food on it. I’m hungry.
The box is small!’ The box is small i cant handle it
lately i have really been wishing i had something that was like an SNES Mini handheld, and it drives me crazy that Nintendo hasn’t already made something like this.
My dream classic console would basically be a handheld SNES/NES combo that also had HDMI out if you wanted to play it on a tv. It would have built in games but also an ‘expansion slot’ so they could put out themed game collections on physical media. So it would come with like the SNES classic lineup, but then there would be an add-on that was the entire Castlevania series (etc).
Like I know the options would either be get a Switch + Nintendo Online, or get one of those pirate handhelds that run emulators. Both of those seem solid but it just drives me crazy that Nintendo is treating their classics library in this weirdly artificially restrictive DISNEY VAULT way. Just let us pay money to play the damn games however we want! The technology is there!
There are handheld snes with hdmi out.
Wish I had one
Rudie are you talking about the Supaboy and it’s ilk?
These appear to have gotten a lot better over the years, but they still have a worst of both worlds vibe. They are big and bulky, they use the original carts which are too big for a portable, but also they are all clone systems essentially emulating the SNES.
The micro has a menu with save-states and brightness settings. They really should have done a full-size version with the effort put into these.
