FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 2)

i have been putting off making my big dragon quest x online post for many reasons, and one of them is fear, but i am breaking my silence briefly to say that the amount of affection and attention that it gives to the history and lore of the goof-off is, sincerely, unlike anything i have ever seen in my life

did you think these guys first appeared in dragon quest xi

or maybe any of these guys

no, you are wrong, turns out they first appeared in mmo and real dragon quest game “dragon quest x,” which me and my internet boyfriend have played for many hours since i decided to install it at the height of the worst fever i’ve had in a decade on thanksgiving day 2024

official reports are still in early stages but other elements of dqxi that actually first appeared in dqx include

  • the exact slot machine
  • the fun-size forge minigame
  • the thing where enemy names turn yellow/orange when their hp gets low enough
  • the colored magic/skill icons (blue up arrow for buff, purple down arrow for debuff, green church icon for healing, etc)
  • “hard mode”
  • rare alt-colored versions of monsters with unique drops
  • the rubblerouser family of spells
  • zin, which i thought was invented in dqiiihd, also is from x turns out

elements of dqx that come from older entries are of course numerous, though with that in mind there are still many that are strange enough to be surprising to the scholar. they’re mostly hard to talk about without sounding like i’ve lost it (the spell-canceling buff “fendspell,” long believed to be exclusive to dqiv’s hero (later re-localized as “snub,” it only ever appeared again as an enemy-exclusive buff in dqxi), is here in x) but i will mention that 1. turns out they used the base game and the first major patches to fill out the mmo vocation roster to match dqix’s vocations exactly before moving on to new classes, which i think is kind of cute, and 2. my boy prancing pillar, who we all thought had been permanently exiled to monsters spinoffs after appearing once in dqvii, is here!

ok here’s one more, there’s also, god help us all, co-op sugoroku

(this is actually the only time sugoroku has appeared in a non-remake dragon quest. take that one to trivia night)

funny this series has its staunchly traditionalist rep when basically every new mechanic concept it’s gained since at least the Super Famicom days has carried forward in some form even/especially into remakes

like contrast pokemon which introduces a new mechanic every generation only to walk it back hard in the next

For DQ1, they should add a Bad End post game where you defeat future heroes or something just to lengthen it

oh hey is that implying that Princess of Cannock might be a new 4th party member in DQ2? hmm

Looks gorgeous~

my current guess is that it is her and that it’s going to be a new post-credits chapter situation

made me think of the intense alternate ending stuff from Dragon Quest II – 1987 Interview - shmuplations.com

gotta say they are doing a really fucking good job at justifying these hi-fi remakes of such humble old games. this looks gorgeous

im still really excited that Princess of Cannock gets to be in the party now, both evening out the sexes and making up for DQ2’s kinda wonky party balance. i hope she’s more competent than her brother, the most punished prince. (im assuming the weird little side quest where he falls ill is still in there? so i guess you could optionally leave him out if you want)

It’s so bizarre hearing this trailer for DQ 1 & 2 frame all the context around DQ 3. Like at 5 min in, they say something like “there’s all the returning monsters from dragon quest 3 and many more” and it’s like what?? It’s the second game, why is there more monsters?? lol

Also, I tried playing DQ3 with a solo hero but found it so incredibly boring that I would fall asleep, so I wonder how DQ1 will feel when it’s just a hero-only show. I would’ve thought they’d add a slime or something as a friend but I guess they wanted to keep it a relatively authentic experience.

Also bless the trailer narrator, they were really putting work in to make the standard DQ features like gathering items and equipment sound important and novel lol

If the game still lets you keep the princess with you til the end of the game so long as you never go back to the castle, you should be able to have her chip in on a few fights here and there…

attacking enemies on world map. and i’d say the brief glimpse of combat suggests you can hot-swap party members in battle. looks like pep is back in some form. also kiefer looks kind of insane to me. anyway my main takeaways at this time are

  1. do i need to actually play more than a few hours of the 3ds version between now and then for the purposes of my studies ;_;

  2. thank jesus on his high mountain it’s not “hd-2d”
