FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 2)

The loading times absolutely killed DQ8 for me. You need to be able to get in and out of battles at a snappy pace.

Horii: Yeah, the Dragon Quest team all happened to like games.

Finally got around to reading this interview. I love this type of shit.

DQ3HD - I love it whenever you encounter in the underworld a callback to one of the little side plots or characters from the overworld. Yes, it’s simple and infrequent, but give me more of that warm and gentle understated narrative.

I sent Zoma packing! I like that the postgame involves ascending to heaven, which turns out to be a little island with a mining tunnel full of tough monsters. But I’m not gonna do it, I’m done! I’ve killed the dark lord, let me rest.

The reveal at the end was funny cuz I was just like ā€œWho the hell is Hargon?ā€

I like how you fight Baramos, AND Baramos’s soul TWICE, AND Baramos’s skeleton, but then you just fight Zoma once and he’s done. I know who the real dark lord was here… I bet if you do the heaven dungeon you have to fight Baramos’s ashes at the end.

Good game. I’ve got the 1+2 remake too, but I’m gonna wait a good long while before I bust it out cuz I am gonna be Dragon Quested OUT for a while.

Given the HD-2D games run like shit on Switch, I’m surprised how well the demo for DQ VII Reimagined runs on it.

I’ll have to play it on Steam to see where things got pared back, but it seems…totally fine?

It definitely looks better on PC (it looks alright on Steam Deck maxed out if you turn on the dynamic feature that scales stuff as needed for 60 FPS).

Impressions out there say it’s super dumbed down from the 3DS and especially the PSOne, though. Kinda feels that way, even as a newcomer to it.

I haven’t played it yet but that’s really disappointing to hear though not surprising. Sure looks pretty though.

Looks like they let you tweak the difficulty a good deal.

Have they reduced the time-to-first-battle from the start again from the 3DS? I only played the 3DS version and I liked the slow opening to that game and that it was like 2 hours to the first battle. And that was even cut down by about half from the PS1.

One thing I’ve seen hinted at that sounds like a really detrimental change to the plot is apparently Keifer comes back to the party. I’m hoping I’ve just misinterpreted something though

I just reached the first battle after about an hour and I really took my time talking to everyone, buying and selling equipment, and looting every nook and cranny.

definitely getting the impression they’ve turned DQ7 into like a 40 hour game and I’m probably one of not many people who is happy about that

I like that you can toggle the difficulty so it’s bonus XP and stronger monsters, I like a quicker but more challenging game

I put over two hours into it and got to the first dungeon. I’m liking it a lot so far on the hard difficulty. In some fields there is an extra tough version of a particular monster and defeating it will give you a monster heart for that monster type which you can then equip as an accessory. The first one you find boosts your crit chance. It’s a one-off encounter too so once you beat it that’s it you can’t farm them or anything like that.

It’s very breezy and pretty to look at it. I never played the PS1 game just the 3DS version so I don’t have a good sense of what all has been cut out. Sounds like a lot! I’d like to play the original version some day.

nice… the 3ds remake was short but devoid of any challenge

When you load your save it asks you if you want a reminder of where you are in the story. The recap screen is pretty well written, story book style, with sections for the main story and side quests (called sub-stories) that you can drill into further for each major plot beat. Really well done and now I wish every game did this.

Finished the demo. It didn’t end when I thought it would. After you restore Ballymolloy and return to the present they let you play long enough to find more tablet fragments to where you have enough to open up one or maybe two more islands. Then they cut you off. Pretty good way to do it as I was into the flow of it just questing and adventuring.

IGN gave Reimagined a 7/10 for being too easy.

Yeah it does seem like that is gonna be an issue based on the demo. I played it on hard and felt very little challenge. Also the change to all skills using MP made me sad coming off the original.
