Shortly after that stupid bandit tower, I really enjoyed the vignette where:
The king of Fantasy Italy abdicates the throne and crowns you the new ruler so he can go bet on monsters in the coliseum. I was playing with the more feminine hero sprite, so I was crowned queen, and sat on the throne next to the other queen, who when I later stepped down remarked that she wished I could have stayed longer because she was excited about my vision for Romaria. Lol.
It’s droll genre-parody stuff like that and the pyramid ghost that lets you go free if you’re honest to him about stealing his artifact that makes me think, “oh, it wasn’t just the battle system that the Mother games borrowed from Dragon Quest.” As a #1 die hard Mother fan, it’s really pleasing to see the lineage.
I’m gonna go for it, in Dragon Quest 1. There’s some stuff I’ll miss in the castle but I’m gonna do what I didn’t do in the old Switch version and have Gwaelin with me for the rest of the game.
it is such absolute fucking bullshit that all the end bosses in DQ2 can cast Healall. like i made it all the way to Malroth and he spammed it over and over until my party simply ran out of MP. dogshit game, stupid series should have ended there, Yuji Horii can kick rocks, im flipping over the fucking table and breaking all the fine china
the dickhead priest roasting me every time i die is just shit icing on the fart cake. SLEEPYS GETTIN UPSET!!!
seriously though what a terrible final boss lol. like even his regular attack has a chance to knock out a party member for a round!! what the hell man!!!
i assume the same way im going to beat the damn thing tonight: bloody-minded determination mixed with lucky dice rolls
Like the one saving grace is none of the bosses have more than 250 HP. i’m two crits away from victory at all times
kinda tempted to do the Falcon Sword of Destruction glitch though: switch the Prince of Lorasia from the Falcon Sword to the Sword of Destruction and leave Hargon’s castle without dispelling the illusion, it resets to a Falcon Sword without resetting his stats, now you can attack twice with the strongest weapon in the game. i mean if the games not gonna play fair why should i!!
I beat DQ1 Remake tonight (I used my gamer PC monitor that has speakers built into it) and man, that was real satisfying. I had to look up where to get one piece of the Erdrick armor because I had completely missed one flag on the quest that got it, but that was OK. I will say on normal difficulty with the level-up healing, it still manages to be a bit difficult, but only if you push yourself constantly to do things as soon as you can, which is a pretty fun way to play.
The spike armor was pretty sweet when I got a boss to kill himself on it.
alright hell yeah after playing for most of my day off i beat Dragon Quest 3 NES aka Dragon Warrior 3!!! nearly got my fucking ass beat by Zoma until i remembered to use the Sphere of Light which i think i forget to do just about every time i play the game!! oops lol!!!
still up there with my favorite games in the series. i’ve only ever completed the remakes before and so im happy to report this version is incredibly playable and good and well-balanced, they really just made it go down a bit smoother. The endgame is mean & tough but not nearly as nasty as 2 got and i think the SFC/GBC versions managed to keep it appropriately grueling even with some of the edges sanded off. excited to try that HD2D version someday
love that the mascot costume just turns the character you equip it on into a cat in this one
Still think returning you to Alefgard for the last act of the game and subsequently playing with your knowledge of the first game is one of the best twists in videogames. No joke it genuinely surprised me the first time i played the game, before i had much greater knowledge of the series. It’s a really well-done twist, you genuinely think you’ve won after killing Baramos and Zoma just straight up fuckin interrupts your fun ending montage. One of those things that would have exploded my brain if i had been playing the series contemporaneously
P.S. can we talk a lil bit about the Sage’s Stone. i both respect it and yet see it as a bit of an admission of guilt, that eventually Armor Project & co. realized that in order to keep ramping up the difficulty they’d basically need to hand you an unlimited use Healus/Multiheal. it’s shown up in every Dragon Quest game ive played since this one and im guessing it’s in the ones i haven’t played as well; my martial artist (the cat) was spamming it for most of the Zoma fight and ALL of the random battles leading up to him, just to tamp down our party’s MP use
there is such a weird sense of sadness at the start of dragon quest 7…my dad is kind of a dick but everyone talks about him like hes the greatest ever…i look in the mirror and all the text is like like i look like shit im disgusting…but you know its exciting there were fireworks the ship set off yay exciting right??? NO. you were a premature birth. the shopkeepers wife thinks about how you almost died every year at this time. fuck you
cant wait to get sent on a emotional rollercoaster by yuji horii yet again. fishbel and estard are some good ass town names
also i will finish dq2 and 3 at some point im just too distracted by the fact i get to play a game on my beloved dq5 ds engine (actually dq7’s apparently!!!) once more
I think they could safely not show me a monster for another four hours and I would be good. Dragon Quest villagers are so bitchy when they don’t have to deal with monsters or evil wizards or whatever
i love how the closer you come to opening up the ruins, the more villagers start talking about whether their peaceful lives are just an illusion waiting to be shattered and the value of living a life without struggle and all this extremely heavy shit
meanwhile kiefer is building up the EXCITEMENT and FUN of this cool adventure we’re gonna go on in party chat even when you’re knee deep in the puzzle dimension (great first dungeon btw highly recommended if you are laying around sick) and then you get sent straight to yuji horii’s pathologic fucking nightmare village. amazing opening to a rpg. the time of monsters…has returned
I doubt this is a controversial opinion but it’s fucking crazy the 3ds version of 7 completely removes the puzzles from the ancient ruins and there’s just an NPC who assembles the tablets for you instead. The part where you have to play Tomb Raider is cool! You fuckers!!!
