i’ve been learning how to speedrun dragon quest 1 (gbc version, dragon loop with princess ending at level 18). as has been said here a million times, it’s a perfect game with perfect numberfeel and a perfect world map, and the gbc version is the cutest. it’s been meditative and comforting to get familiar with the route and run through it while streaming to my gf over discord every night, and there’s a surprising amount of nuance and challenge involved in running even such a simple game, especially with such a relatively stressful final boss. i’m considering returning to twitch streaming once i’m ready to do proper attempts.
in turn, my gf has been streaming dq11 to me (her first time playing one of these). she’s a professional japanese translator and we’ve been playing with jp voices and english text and it’s reassuring to hear from her what i already felt, that the localization is atrociously twee and interferes with the elegant simplicity of the original writing by constantly and artificially introducing Bits and overbearing jokey dialects. i know it’s a big part of the series identity in the west and that it has its fans here, but i really hate frilly excessive localized prose that’s insecure about its audience and the strength of the original material. we didn’t deserve nob ogasawara’s work on the series in 1999-2001 translating the gbc remakes of 1, 2 and 3 as well as dqm2, or the sensitivity and directness of the more recent (unrelated) work of translation quest, or even the original straightforward localization of 4. 11 is amazing though, gorgeous and comfy and charming and sylvia and veronica are the best. i’ve never actually finished it, so i’m hoping we can make it to the normal ending at least. i’m a big fan of dungeon survival tension in rpgs, and while 11 has QoL-ed that aspect out, i appreciate that its boss fights feel taut and pleasingly involved when underleveled, and that it gives you good reason to fight monsters even when they can be avoided.
it’s been fun looking at the series from both ends simultaneously, seeing how the same dna is expressed at its most elemental and its most luxurious. dragon quest rules.
Just to make sure I’m not misreading this, the translation quest guys have nothing to do with Nob, right? Would be wild if he went back to helping loc games again decades after he’s done and retired
I’ve been had by Horii’s oldest trick…DQVI spoilers below
After my third or fourth attempt at fighting Mudo, I had finally landed on a strategy that seemed to work; however, two of my party members were killed by repeated fiery breath attacks. I nearly jumped out of my seat with joy when my bruiser landed a killing blow. Then, the motherfucker gets back up “reveals his true power” and starts taking two turns every round. I’ll try again tonight, but…I feel so weak. I don’t even know where I can find metal slimes…
haven’t logged in in a bit (going to soon #dqseason) but iirc there’s no sub gate at all, with the caveat you’d probably want access to the market board to really dig in
I’m gonna play this DQ 1+2 remake! I’m in the mood for some classic JRPG type stuff. I’ve only played the original DQ and DQ11, so it’ll be fun to play 2 for the first time.
I think I’m gonna play 8 like how I mentioned in some discord earlier (I’m sorry if you think I forgot your discord but there are a lot of sb discords!!) . I’ve only played 8 in deep depressions and I’m curious how I’ll feel about it when I’m happy
I have a real hate on for Level 5 and for non-Nocturne PS2 jRPGs in general but even so I don’t like 8 much, it’s probably the simplest game in the series systems-wise literally since 2 (and its skill system is almost worse than having nothing at all in that department because unlike 11 it just sort of complicates stuff without giving you much freedom).
I would recommend 3-4-5-11 well ahead of any of the others to most people rn (7 is great but I strongly suspect the upcoming remake will be much better than any other way of playing 7). probably the remake has made 2 a lot more appealing as well.
I basically agree with that. I’m playing VI right now and it feels tricky in a way that is only going to win over people who’ve already signed onto the entire program.
11 is just incredibly good in a way that they had not figured out for a very long time since the early days. 7 was definitely the best of the post-5 games before 11, but neither of the ways of playing 7 for the next few months are all that easy to recommend.
