FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

yangus for sure. i never finished it but 40 hours of 8 was my first exposure to dq.

the others are from 11 cause i otherwise don’t usually think of dq chars as characters.
veronica is great because im so there for it any time she starts tearing into someone.

and hendrik gets really cute eventually. try asking him to do a wedding rehearsal with you and he takes it dead seriously in such an adorable way, like he just immediately considers a future with the protag and starts planning and im so sad you don’t get to marry him

For me it is and always will be Erik. I can’t think of any other digital creation that I’ve cared for as much. He’s my partner. I hook with him at the end of every playthrough, no question.

You like tsun tsun dere dere it’s ok youre in good company

I really need to play 11 already, the cast seems great. Probably with some of those bonus options, like your hero randomly getting an anxiety attack and being helpless

Torneko Taloon is an obvious good character but someone should mention him. I think between his chapter and his mystery dungeon games he has easily the most memorable character theme in the series

One of the best moments in DQ4 at the meetup was when @bib had to pull Taloon out of the wagon against Necrosaro/Deathpsaro and he immediately attempted to sing a lullaby to the fucking endboss (unsuccessfully)

One of the worst moments was when i forgot to blow the Barons Horn to summon the party wagon, and had to get through the whole 7-phase fight with Alena, Mara and Nara. they pulled a victory out by the skin of their teeth though with Mara at 0 MP using a Staff of Thunder to do like 40 damage and finish him off. It was very funny that the characters basically won it for me while I just watched anxiously. DQ4 OG forcing you to rely on party AI was uhh, a fun choice

DQ games ranked by hero designs (i will leave out 9 & 10 because they’re build-a-hero)

4 heroine > 5 > 8 > 2 > 1 > 7 > 3 heroine > 4 hero > 3 hero > 6 > 11. I’m sorry but the DQ11 hero looks like such a fucking dork, to me

The most memorable moment of that whole game for me is when Henry tells you to look in the chest because he’s left you something in it.

I keep dying and respawning at the castle. the king is very disappointed in me.

I’ve only played the Switch version, but yeah, ya gotta grind a bit.

Really refreshing to start an RPG and just get let loose and not spend 20 minutes getting out of bed, walking downstairs to your parent talking about how your dad disappeared, then going to the town festival, only for a cataclysm to break loose and deal with the aftermath, before finally setting off.

I keep meaning to replay DQ1 if only to have the princess follow me to the end of the game, rather than immediately return her to the castle like I did on my first run.

the first game, using this retranslation patch

i strongly maintain that the first one is the best one but perhaps what i mean is that it is the purest one. it’s more of a diet mystery dungeon game than an RPG in some senses, and i love how small and focused it is. it really centers on the breeding and personality mechanics a lot.

do not play the remake.

i think the best real answer here is probably the second one though. it’s much more like a dragon quest game in structure but keeps all the complex breeding mechanics from the first. it’s a lovely game, and they’re both pretty breezy in terms of time/difficulty.

caravan hearts is fucking weird and i don’t recommend it except as a curiosity.

the joker games are visual feasts but i don’t think they’re nearly as good. a little too anime for my tastes

FAKE EDIT: okay yeah what @shelter said is the real answer, i forgot my last playthrough of the first one was with that retranslation patch, it’s actually good as hell

yeah i vaguely remember playing a couple of hours of perhaps the first joker on ds and not getting into it
