The best dragon quest character is the slime in 4 who visits Santeem Castle after the humans there disappear because he was concerned about his best friend, who is a local cat

wourme bloodpotioned this just now and having recently played the original dragon warrior 4 with you all in the octagon i must with GREAT humility repent of my vulgar slander against it three years past. 4’s numbers are sublime.

@Khan and i have been talking about how good 4’a design is for weeks now. hey babe remind me to effortpost on this topic later

Speaking of 4, i’ve never played 4 despite having it all spoiled for me. In the modern day, what is the best way to experience it? NES, PS1, or DS?

I really can’t stand the “modern” localization but are the quality of life changes worth it?

I have spent the most time with the DS version. It’s good, regional dialects are fine, DS resolution 3D with sprites looks fine.
When I saw the NES version at the meetup, I was really struck by how it looked in It’s original form. One of the most visually confident designs I’ve seen from top to bottom.

i played the DS version which is fine

the NES version is kind of transcendent though. it’s very ambitious for an 8-bit RPG and that vibe is totally lost in any of the remakes

Seen a lot of folks online claim the lamentably-ideal version of 4 is…the mobile port?

I guess when Nintendo or whoever handled bringing 4 over, they opted out of translating and including the Party Chat feature, where I guess you can just talk to your party at any given time, get little contextual characterization here and there.

There’s a janky method of patching the Japanese DS version with an incomplete version of the Android script out there, which doesn’t really sound like it’s worth the effort. I guess it depends on how important randomly checking in on your party’s input is!

someone is working on a translation of the ps1 version but updates seem pretty sporadic so not getting very hype about that

ds has the patch that restores party chat, would probably just play this version

im a big mark for the remake exclusive stuff honestly

After seeing so much of the original im curious to play the remake for comparisons sake, but i do think the NES version is kind of perfect the way it is. In addition to being a narratively unique game in all versions (and the NES one is imo still a little better for not introducing the hero until chapter 5, no prologue just foreshadowing), the OG does some really showoffy stuff with the hardware that makes it clearly their crowning achievement for the 8-bit games, the last boss alone is an amazing transforming elaborately animated showstopper (it was so sick to be in an audience of people going WHOOOAAA HOLY SHIT at all of his form changes)

It sucks that the DS remake lacked party chat because thats the most clear upgrade. With a cast as good as 4’s i absolutely want to get more interaction and characterization out of them! i would not play the remake without that patch.

Also if the modern regional dialect translation is a bear 4 is absolutely the most over the top about it basically right away lol. the bit ive played in chapter 1 has everyone as a nearly unreadable Scot wailing about the WEE BAIRNS and chapter 2 everyone has Boris and Natasha ass hyper Russian accents. I think its funny and i like all the puns in the newer localizations but ymmv

meanwhile, in fantasy Tibet

I missed the ‘fav characters/monsters’ talk from earlier, but I like the Capsichums. They’re such good buds that they are perfectly happy to be skewered together:
