FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

So does the world of DQ have a Goddess or God? In IX, all the churches worshiped a Goddess, and VII there’s statues of ladies in churches, but there’s a God of the world. What’s the deal?

um actually /pushesupglasses/ i think youll find that in ix they worshipped the ALMIGHTY

One thing I wish they updated in Dragon Quest are the monster designs.

DQ will never achieve the weirdness of FF monsters if they still stick to those goofy cartoon monsters. I get that a lot of the designs are “iconic” now, but most aren’t very interesting…

I mean, keep slimes for sure, golems too maybe. But the zombies look pretty bad…

Wow i have never disagreed harder with a DQ opinion.

The monsters are the best thing about every jrpg and DQ’s are flawless

I love the goofy cartoon style, but a few redesigns and updates wouldn’t hurt here and there. I know DQ thrives on tradition, for some reason it is the video game series most like eating breakfast cereal, but at the same time I do want to see more variety in the enemy designs. I know there are additions in every release, but lately it seems like they are chugging along in an even more ‘greatest hits’ style than in the past–perhaps that’s because there hasn’t been a legitimate main series single player DQ game since 8 (I say this as someone who played the fuck out of 9, it is still more like a [mostly] single player MMO than an actual DQ game). Hoping to be impressed whenever more info about 11 comes out.

Seriously?

I mean, I like the style. I’m not criticising the designs (a pinch of goofiness isn’t necessarily a killer), more like its constant overuse. If I have to fight another palette variation of these:

or go to a town and see the 7th copy of this guy:

I’m going to scream.

I’m on Iacus’ side only insofar as it supports one of my endless bugbears about japanese games – up until the PS2 era it was still interesting and neat to see these well-realized, modern-ish, fully-3D productions, and indeed, the 7th copy of that guy in dragon quest VIII was still kind of novel.

thing is though that dragon quest VIII came out in 2004 and since then they could be accused of coasting

That’s how i read your post. Especially comparing them to the weirdness of Final Fantasy monsters. Dragon Quest monsters have plenty of weirdness to go around.
i totally agree they should reach deeper into the back catalog

npcs are a different discussion entirely. Though you also picked my favorite.

Well, ok. I admit I’m not too familiar with the DQ bestiary across the whole series, but even so, I’d say that link has maybe 20-30% genuinely strange monsters.

I stand by my comment that FF monsters are, on average weirder. Although this depends a lot on the title. FF8 is mostly “realistic”-looking beasts and humanoids, but FF6 and FF7 have some really out there creatures…

There’s a bogleech for them, too!

there’s also room enough in my heart to think both series have good monsters.

i feel like this might be down to the hardware they’ve commited to in that time

i’m still at the point where i’d take coasting dragon quest over most things, mind

I hate the “towns are different cultures from Earth” localization a whole bunch, though I think calling DQVII’s nomadic tribe “The Roamers” might be the worst example of it to date. Still early in the game though, who knows what terrors await!

english builders demo is up on psn

I love it

Downloaded the Builders demo but uninstalled it after getting out of the first room once it became apparent there was going to be some heavy tutorializing going on and I realized I did not want anything to do with any of it.

I already understand how Minecraft and Dragon Quest work just let me play the game dammit.

Welp I pre-ordered Builders right away because I’m shallow and the music hit the good spots in my brain

I mean, if they had just let me retain movement control of the character while they were dumping text boxes on me it would have gone a long way.

DQVII is p good but it sure makes me feel old. i dunno how it manages to be breezy and slug-paced at the same time.

About to unlock vocations. It should be illegal to prevent a player from turning the fucking game music off. maybe a hundred-twenty hour adventure should have more than like five pieces of music in it

Is this game selling? My local Best Buy had to restock on launch weekend, and I wasn’t immediately able to get it from Canadian Amazon

and

anyone word on us getting DQ Theatrhythm now?
