FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

ah damn I actually got pretty close to beating the act 2 boss the first try (got to the second phase and killed one of the two heads just as I got wiped), not sure how many times I want to try that all over again but at least it seems doable

glad I read online that the first phase is vulnerable to blind because I would not have thought of that and the one turn it wouldn’t stick was pretty messy

also erik is a god after spending about 30 hours in the middle there doing nothing for me, he can consistently hit for 2000+ when everyone else almost never breaks 1000

I think I’m at like 54 hours which considering all the switch stuff and stronger monsters seems relatively civilized

Erik’s late game superiority is so ridiculous he is such a silly man and I love him

man

one part revived the other and I then killed them in the right order then I had the last one that couldn’t revive down to red after a fuckin hour and ran out of mp

fucking dragon quest ugh

I feel insulted but guess I’ll do that shit again

That fight took me down to the marrow and about forty minutes – it was an absolutely glorious feat of combat balance when I pulled it off but it’d be crushing if I fell off that knife edge.

yeah I’ve shit it up thrice now due to novel information and am just irritated

am old, get point, have things to do, would push button to win

really not sure they can claim to have made this game for people who had better things to do than play dragon quest and not give you a checkpoint

well, hard mode

Dragon Quest seems to have always believed more strongly in actually-tough final bosses than its progenitors, and this really is the final boss - watch how well they tie it up to make stopping after this absolutely valid while supporting the extra endgame, it’s so very elegant.

yeah, it’s just too fucking long and whether you can get a good hit off is too RNG-dependent for the loss conditions to be “didn’t know he can revive if you kill his parts in the wrong order” and “out of MP when he’s 90% dead”

jRPGs are always on a knife edge like this with “should I be doing literally anything more enriching or responsible with my time” and it’s over

the only valid modes should be “hard mode” and “advance the story for me fuck you,” normal mode is more insulting than either

normal mode might be the latter really

Normal mode is great for just never needing to fight enemies unless I want to. I’ve enjoyed it.

Luckily, hard works the same and you end up doing most enemy encounters twice or so

Honestly, haven’t even needed once in most areas. I’ve only done it to fill out my enemy list.

just absolutely brutalized him the fourth go

no one dead, had every imaginable buff up

yeah think that might be too much foreknowledge and rng for such a long fight

ah well

He was pretty nice on normal. Hard, almost wiped me, but managed to scrape by on my first time. It was when I found out about the backup party, and it was a perfect moment for that.

the only thing I really changed on later attempts was “just put some kind of barrier up when you want to sap because you no longer have the patience for anything to miss” and, well

for better or worse that did it

can’t stay mad at this game though, between the excellent sparing use of FMV and the pitch perfect lift from macross in the scene not long after

Yeah the lack of FMV aside from a few key moments is such a nice thing. DQ was never an abuser of FMV, but I was really glad that didn’t change here.

So, I would like to start this game by this weekend. What’s the recommended difficulty level?
I have played tons of jrpg until 10 years ago.
I plan to play this game only once.

At the name entry screen you can pick ‘Draconian Quest’ challenges, the most recommended ones would be the stronger monsters, no XP for weak monsters and Shypox. Stronger monsters makes it a fair bit more difficult, but without it the game is pretty much challenge free for a good 40 hours.

You can turn any of the challenge modes off at the churches at any time, but you can’t turn them back on unless you start a new game.

yeah i strongly recommend at least trying stronger monsters since you can turn it off later but not on

it added an awful lot to the game for me (and several others in the thread!)

If I ever finish the whole game once, i will probably try to replay it with everything on and that will be funny.
