FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

Beware the high level palette swap Wolf Amphibian

I mean you do encounter them in poisonous swamps. They might very well be amphibious

the scene where you all make a sword together is the best and most dragon quest thing even though I don’t think it’s been in another game ever quite like that wow

in addition to being more final fantasy than these usually are it’s also more dragon ball

indignus is also a great name for a pushover late game boss with too many abs

This is so much better than any of the other DQ localizations, they were really firing on all cylinders, I’m glad this thread plus all that nice sprite work finally sold me on it. honestly astonished that there was a team at squeenix who knew exactly what they wanted to do with this for it to have turned out the way it did, it’s such a careful study of 20 years ago

big budget Japanese games seriously figured their shit out, everything is coming out so pleasantly solid again all of a sudden

I also love how in the later game you have more resource management across long boss fights than you do in dungeons, to the point that for the last few I’ve basically had my relief pitching team come in around the 2/3 mark when MP is starting to wear down for my lead guys or I get knocked off my healing rotation and I know I won’t be able to recover cleanly without making a substitution

for a dragon quest game they really cherrypicked a lot of other mechanics

Yeah the final boss required me to be swapping out my characters to switch off on buffs/heals. I play the game super underleveled so maybe this wouldn’t be a necessity for people who enjoy grinding.

I’ve been fairly underleveled for the most part myself (I think my team is like 47 as I’m approaching the end of part 2 on stronger monsters) but it’s very easy to go gain levels quickly when you need to which I really appreciate

if you ever get into true level 99 leveling there are even these weird puzzle tricks to get up there

What are the weird puzzle tricks? I’m in the late postgame with my main party fully equipped with the endgame gear. The only thing left for me to do before fighting the big bad is leveling. I put the game down for a while because I needed a break. After level ~65 I started finding it difficult to get to areas with efficient grinding. Maybe I just haven’t been looking enough. There are definitely a lot of postgame quests still left to do, but yeah, I took a break from those.

you’ll get ~8-12 levels per fight doing this

Oh hell yeah metal king slimes. I only knew of their spawn locations in The Fortress of Fear, and because it doesn’t exist in the endgame I just kind of went :woman_shrugging: .

I’m the kind of person who likes to play JRPGs with guides. I managed to avoid using a guide for the entirety of the main story of DQXI, since it was so well-paced. But I approach this kind of thing with the mindset of someone sharing tips and tricks in the pre-internet days. My attention span is garbo so JRPGs are like a huge hurdle, but it’s a nice feeling to overcome when you have someone else backing you up. Like, spoiler-free hints like ā€œdo this as such and you’ll get thatā€ tend to be really invigorating because it adds an extra layer to the ā€œquestingā€ feeling and is a little bonus incentive.

Not that I stuck around for much of it, but the DraQue playthrough at SBCON3 was amazing. I felt like I was rooting for everyone involved. Go Loto!

Is there a location where you can buy pep pips? I only have a handful

you get like 12 free from quests and stuff and the rest cost a fortune

you should only need half of those to max your levels though

there definitely is, but i forget where

you can just hang out in a fight until people get pepped and then sideline them to bank it until you have the ones you need

which i recognize is absurd, but, you know, listen to a podcast or something

That’s exactly what I had been doing for my electro light grind and it got really boring after my first attempt got me killing machines, so I gave up!

you get everyone ready and then save before you pop it

lol
