this conversation feels like an opportunity to whine about the absence of an english patch for psx dq4. i would drop everything to play that. if square enix weren’t THE ABSOLUTE WORST when it comes to preserving or ‘upgrading’ their own games, maybe we’d at least have a cool port of this version on switch etc. been lazily wishing skilled people would get a patch made for years. i’m quite sure it’d be among my very favorite dq games/versions.
my experience with DQ11’s localization was “oh ok this is cute i guess” in hotto progressing to “oh my god stop” by the time you get to the city where everyone talks like olive garden ad copy
I think they reined it in a bit with 11. It’s closer to 8’s, which I thought was fine, and nowhere near overdone as 4, where the opening reads like fucking Trainspotting. I remember planning to give that game to one of my nephews as a gift cuz he loved Pokemon and Dragon Ball and Lord of the Rings shit but that chapter sure put an end to those plans.
When I looked at gameplay footage of the 3D remake, the first thing I noticed was how lifeless and vast the outdoor environments were. Looks completely dull and eerie.
If you are going to emulate DQ8 I’d say go with the ps2 version. The graphics are better and the quality of life improvements on the 3ds aren’t major. The visible enemy encounters on the 3ds version feel hacked in. If you skip enemy encounters en route to your locations you need to periodically stop and grind to compensate. That might sound obvious, but I didn’t really notice needing to do that with the 3ds remake of DQ7. The main advantage of the 3ds port of DQ8 is that it’s portable.
It’s so excellently crafted, along with the options/mode you chose (which I might’ve wisely done but densely insisted on the base)
you are indeed experiencing one of the Best Long Rides, a charming and fantastic jerp.
This might be a ways off but once you reach end credits, keep in mind “post-game” truly is an Act 3, which includes looping back through certain plot threads world aspects and Big True End. It also becomes a lot tougher so party and equipment upping, grind can be real.
On the other hand I had such a blast seeing every corner opening every single chest, that only in the last dozen hours did I make it a point to lvl, and there’s a key method or two you might discover if it becomes a necessity.
yeah even on stronger monsters and only deliberately fighting like two or three battles in each new area the only time I had to go actually gain more than one level was like 45 minutes of sailing over and fighting king slimes, really not bad
i don’t know who i’m looking out for by posting this, exactly, but i do wish basically every mention of “act 3” was at least put in a spoiler-- not knowing certain things were coming turned out to be a real joy, and even having that vague term in mind would have stunted it a bit
