I’m all for replacing random battles with a better system, but I think that bumping into single enemies to initiate a group battle is a wretched solution. Wretched.

it’s the ā€œdevs played persona 4ā€ solution

also has anyone pointed out yet how DQ11 rehabilitates a lot of the elements that didn’t work or could’ve worked in Final Fantasy X of all things

so much of it seems like that was the template for a much better game

If the battle itself is on a different plane than the world map then why does it matter

wow, earthbound still ahead of its time

ā€œbetterā€ in that it has a few qol improvements but i’m begging to differ pretty hard, here. the atmosphere and life and soul of the ps2 version is pretty much entirely absent in the 3ds version, if you ask me

Dragon Quest VIII on a handheld vs Dragon Quest VIII not on a handheld

I take the handheld

i mean if that’s the foremost criteria, naturally

can you elaborate? i’m emulating either way. i haven’t touched DQVIII since it came out, so i’m looking to play it again, if just for a few hours.

Nah, the DW mobile ports are significantly graphically inferior to the PS1 DQ7. The DS ones are the closest, but they still don’t quite get there.

does it matter which dq7 i play? i’m playing (if you can call it that) the 3ds version because i presume it probably has some quality of life changes.

it’s a few simple things, i think. the higher poly count on characters, the presence of additional textures and details in towns (e.g. cobblestones, lit torches), the ā€œwetterā€ sound of the orchestral ost (and i’m aware of the patch for the 3ds version, but i believe it uses a different recording and it still sounds worse), its uncompressed voice acting, the size of the screen (even when emulating either version), etc.

being able to use the right stick for camera movement doesn’t hurt.

if you find the brightness of the ps2 version to be too low, mess with gamma/contrast settings.

that said, if you’ve played it before and you’re only planning on revisiting for a few hours, by all means check out the 3ds version…!

p.s. re: dq7 i i think i still prefer the psx version, but having played them both a bit they’re much more different from each other than the ps2 and 3ds versions of 8, so it’s a lot tougher to say, really.

p.p.s.: everybody play dq5 for ps2.

the darkness is part of i think what made dragon quest viii’s world feel good (at least, in 200…4?)

If you want to experience what it’s like to have tunnel vision and to absolutely lose your mind, you can play Phone DQ8, a portrait-mode-only version of the famous 3D open world exploration game that’s as bad as it sounds
