My first DQ game was DQ3 GBC and it was very good. I miss RPGs where you hired your party members.

Is there a table somewhere of what version of each DQ is the best?
honestly the most recent remake of each of them is hard to go wrong with (meaning the DS versions of 4 and 5, which are the best ones anyway, and the 3DS versions of 7 and 8), bearing in mind that the phone releases are generally bad
mmmmm the phone releases are actually pretty good if you can stomach the ui, particularly if you wanna play those versions of 1-3, and the phone version of 4 also includes the party chat stuff, which isn’t in the ds release, so i think that version is just better really
5 has the ds (/phone) version which is of course great but the ps2 remake is different and beautiful, though you have to get a fan translation
7 is weird, the 3ds remake is breezy and charming and easy but the psx version is extremely obtuse and ugly in imo a very lovable way
8 on 3ds includes a bunch of New Content that isn’t in the original release, but it looks like ass where the original release is breathtaking, so you gotta make a call there. i think the consensus here last time this came up was to emulate ps2 version and i can’t really argue with that but i do like the new stuff in the 3ds version a lot

edit i didn’t even think about gbc versions of 1-3 either, those do have their own charms

Man, I dream of an alternate we rld in which PS1 DQ7 sold as well in the US as it did in Japan, and became the standard new RPGs were compared to and those graphics alone make me so happy.

PS1 DQ7’s graphics did become the new standard and that’s why jRPGs moved to mobile

I don’t think you can go wrong with III, V, and VIII? Those are pretty much universally acclaimed. I’ve only played a small amount of the 3DS VII, and it’s all right.

1, 2, 3: GBC, SNES if you want nice graphics
4, 5, 6: DS, but 6 is just bad all around
7, 8: 3DS

is 3ds 8 good then?? vaguely recall hearing it had longer loading times than the ps2 version and loading times on a handheld give me the conniptions
not super enthused about More Stuff in an already 80 hour game either
but no random battles…
it’s a real shame they put it on 3ds instead of ps4 huh
i think ps1 7 is a much more interesting game than the 3ds version and the ps2 version of 8 looks and feels better but both 3ds versions are more convenient to play so whatever works for you

i haven’t tried, does DQVIII emulate well on PCSX2?
needs a couple of setting changes and slightly beefier hardware than most games but yeah
3DS 8 is great. It’s better than the PS2 version. The colors are brighter and more garish but who cares
no random battles is really hard to pass up though, impossible in my case
I forgot about party chat in the phone version of 4 though so I will qualify that recommendation, I’ve still been wishing they’d patch it for the iPhone X screen dimensions like they did with 5
and honestly if it hasn’t been said enough, 11 is imo a lot better than any other DQ after 5 so if you have access to that don’t wait up on it
