FUCK YEAH DRAGON QUEST (Part 1)

Yeah, it definitely affected my motivation the first time I played the game.

An NPC in the original PS2 version, Red gets upgraded into a playable character in the 3DS remake of VIII .

Dang! Now it’s a harder decision.

Red and Morrie being playable characters are the biggest reasons i’d get the remake since theyre the best NPCs in the OG story

3DS also has much more voiced dialogue, for all the complaints I’ve heard about the game’s general atmosphere, I feel like this adds a significant amount back to what might have been lost.

I seriously think overworld monsters are a vast step forward from random battles

They made the right decision with DQ8’s colors. The vibrant colors are way nicer on a 3DS screen. This is the handheld I play in broad daylight in cars and coffeeshops. So yeah, pretty much everything about 3DS is a plus to me.

This is fair and fine of course and you’ve mentioned it before, I (also observing others) have done it lightly, although internet widely…since it wasn’t uncommon for folks to conclude the post-game would just be your usual extra challenges or bosses, cherry sidequests, clean up, etc. which left many general discussions wanting to at least make that impression clear - there is a whole other, major story arc and grand finale. Not everyone was willing to find out after ~60-80 hrs

i think i’d definitely have more appreciation for the 3ds version if i still had an actual 3ds. it totally bears mentioning i’ve only emulated that one. and i mean whatever, we can get down to the details and all that, but either way you’re playing dq8, which remains one of the best jrpgs one can play.

(also, i’m perhaps one of maybe a few here who’d be willing to play both…?)

I’ve played both, and the fact that you have that choice is great.

Now if only they’d port 1 through 6 on the switch (without the horrendous graphics and interface)

squares attempts at repackaging their games seems to lack any kind of coherent strategy or eye towards preservation. i’ve just given up hope on them at this point. imo the FF12 re-release is the first i’ve played since those FF GBA ports to not be a complete mess. (i never had a 3DS tho so maybe i’m missing something)

the FF GBA ports were absolutely a mess but at least in subtle ways and they were still nice little objects

Dragon quest generally remakes well though

i wish we could play the gameboy dq3 on switch instead of that hideous rpgmaker port.

how would you elaborate on that? particular in 5’s case

oh right they retranslated them didn’t they?

for some reason i find that more tolerable than like, FF7’s music restarting after every random battle or those amateurish FF6 & DQ mobile ports

no one should have to read dialogue in Arial

just gonna say rn that i really hope 3 is the next one getting a remake–in the style of 11

the ps2 version of 5 is right there, waiting to be polished up and ported to switch etc

IV introduced a bunch of new bugs but had a nice font, VI fixed bugs but butchered the music and still didn’t really deliver a decent localization (though both are fixed in a romhack), and the added espers are kind of garish. V GBA is good except for no Lenna and Butz

yep. those bugs were fixed in the uk version of 4, thankfully, though the input lag is still a bit of a problem (just not quite as bad). i guess i should check out those romhacks re: the localization, since i’m not sure what they might’ve gotten wrong. i agree about the font change–looks nice. the portraits look better, too. i don’t mind the differences in the music, mostly! i think it actually sounds pretty great in 5 (which also has no input lag and i think a number of other improvements from 4, perhaps due to it not being a port of a wonderswan version…?)

interesting versions at the least, for sure. flawed, yet probably my favorites.

best way to play ff5 is the SNES version with the FF5 localization patch. because i hate that awful, thin, gross font in the GBA version.

i’m gonna guess this might be another difference between the experience of playing made-for-handheld games on actual handhelds vs. playing them on a pc monitor via emulation. oddly enough, playing it on my pc i love the font(s) in gba ff5 haha
