Agree.
i opened the box at work to read the manual and found a pamphlet instructing me on how to read the instruction manual, digitally D:
Welcome to the modern age.
I got this game off the eShop this morning. Wonder when I’ll get into it.
R.I.P. game manuals.
My copy is still “out for delivery” and should be here by the end of the day. I guess I could have bought it on the eshop and have been playing it already (and without any shipping charges) but this will be the first physical release of a game I’ve bought since I got Bloodborne/Just Cause 3 several months ago.
I want to hold that tiny cart in my hand!
Plan for this weekend is DQ7 and puritan literature heck yeah lets goooooo
Not only is there no manual, but the box is a super fragile patchwork of plastic.
I picked my copy up on the way to work this morning. I have nothing to do at work today so I’ve just been sitting here thinking about it. Looking forward to playing it when I get home tonight.
kind of strange to be in the inverse of the cartridge area where I would throw away boxes and keep the manuals, now it’s keep boxes and have no manuals and the little game card is never home in its plastic fort
I like what the long slow intro tries to evoke, but it literally just being “go to place A. Now B. Now back to A. Now to C. Back to B!” I feel really hurts it. A single puzzle being in there somewhere or you actually having to figure something out would have been nice. It’s weirs how there is an illusion of a puzzle near the end, but there’s nothing actually to solve. Otherwise though like I said, I love the feelings and implications of it. You may be the only island in the world, but at least there’s peace. But trying restore the rest of the world seems like it might have the consequences of reintroducing strife and danger to the world. I love the prince’s stir-craziness and wished they had leaned further into him being like those armageddon predicting hobos.
Playing this game is like finally nearly coming full circle for me. I started 8 as my first dq years ago but at some number of hours in I decided to backtrack and start playing through the whole series in order (and ended up doing it completely through portables.) and now here I finally am, almost back to where I started.
I really love the presentation here in 7, but it feels like a downgrade from what I remember of 8. My memory card with my 8 save game was stolen, so I’ll have to start over. I had been thinking about continuing on the portable road with 8, but I’m pretty sure now I’ll just stick with the ps2 version. Don’t get me wrong though, I think what they’ve done with 7 is fantastic.
everything after the intro has been surprisingly free of bullshit- a collection of short stories by a virtuosic statistician
probably going to have to get this. I put about 40 hours in the PS version before I stopped, and I’m pretty overdue for some rpg comfort food.
I’ve spent about five hours on this so far. Up to the part where the party and Hanlon defeat the Golem guarding the tower. So far it’s all been quite wonderful. Great music, great animations and art, great story and characters.
I very much like the changes they made with the battle system and being able to see enemies in the field and while exploring dungeons. Being able to choose your battles or run past everything is just great and every JRPG should have that feature. I also really love the way the battles have you picking your attacks and stuff in first person like a traditional DQ and then pulling back to an over the shoulder view of the whole party while they attack/defend. It’s just a really nice little touch that lets you see your equipped weapons and stuff but also doesn’t bog the breeziness of the battles themselves down with long animations.
Did Dragon Quest VIII 3DS get this same kind of treatment? I know they made the enemies visible/skippable but if they tweaked the battle system to be snappier then that would be swell too.
Think everyone describes the dq8 port as running slower than the ps2 ver in every way.
yeah but
it’s got More Stuff
Dragon Quest 8 is a game for your TV.
This pains me.
I have been umming and ahhing over whether to get dragon quest 8 again for about a year—it would also mean buying a 3DS—but it just looks so horrible whenever I watch videos of it. all jaggy and oversaturated. what a waste
How many hours in does the job system finally unlock in 7? It’s all I really want.
They should make more games like 9 because it’s like the only DQ game I was able to finish outside of V.
I’ve heard it’s like 15-20 depending on how quick you are.
It was 19 in the original. If the intro is 2 hours shorter…hmm.
Each vignette used to be about 3 hours long.
Yeah, I grinded a bit in the original and remember it was around 20 hours in.
I’m pumped for it actually changing how you look in this one.
