Its quite pleasant it seems perfect for a come home from work drink a beer and fall asleep game.
I played 6 DS up to the point where there’s this odd cutscene w/ ingame graphics where blue swordman dude is shown from behind and moves on a 3x2 grid while fighting a hacksaurus, dodging fire breaths, guarding or deflecting fireballs.
I felt this was like taunting a pretty fun looking real time battle system and couldn’t play another single damn random fight after seeing it.

You could, but they basically rebuilt the game from the ground up for the 3DS version, so it looks to be a different experience. The original is still really neat, but also really long, so If you are only gonna play one, I don’t know which to tell you yet.
with dragon quest remakes you really have to figure out the USD to anachronisms exchange rate

i’d say buy this, though i’ve always found the original kinda hideous
the intro is now ~45 mins instead of several hours, too
I always liked the intro and graphics in OGVII, but then again I like DQ games in general more than a lot of the populace, so I am not a good judge. I actually still have my copy of the original version’s strategy guide, so that might help me make comparisons as it has been like almost 15 years since i really got into this game.

I am expecting the 3DS version to be snappier and breezier with brighter colors and more blue skies. also portable.

It’s understandable why they cut the original intro considering only the weirdos on the forum would appreciate something like that. I think it’s a super cool intro too, wish more games would have the guts to do something like that; won’t stop me from playing the director’s cut of 7 though.
