Wow, totally missed that then. I was in a weird state last night, nicely wobbling through until I met thiefbro. I don’t mind the game being breezy for stretches, long as it’s not too cakey. Even then ain’t no big deal - 'sall comfy af.

Yeah I turned the voices off (set the voice volume slider to zero). They’re nice but I read the dialogs faster than the voice actors do the lines and I feel like I should wait for them to finish before buttoning to the next bit.
I only played 44 minutes last night but it was perfectly paced such that I got through the entire introductory bit and I’m ready to head to the next town after the one you start out in.
Boy I like how quick the transition between the overworld screen to battle screen and back is because that was probably my biggest problem with VIII.
So the Switch version is really far away, right? It sounds like they hadn’t broken ground when the J-PS4 version came out.
The switch version is still a long way off I reckon, but maybe we’ll see something at Tokyo game show this month?
I’m already overleveled because I can’t stop running around attacking stuff and enjoying these lush enemy animations.
Like @idiot said this game has a way of diffusing my cynicism about video games like nothing else can and it’s a real delight.

I’ve only ever played half of 5 and half of 8 and I didn’t love them that much so I’m on the fence still
Somehow downloading this crashed my Steam client so hard, I can’t get it back to its old self. The game downloaded fine it seemed. Then I clicked play. Then it “prepared” whatever to play it. It got stuck halfway through and displayed an error message. Since then my steam client is often unresponsive for minutes. I reinstalled it. No dice. I did the integrity check on the game several times. I decided to finally let go of playing the game today, so I tried to delete it and redownload it. I… can’t delete it. Steam just hangs up.
WTF is this? Was there a bad steam update? Is my harddisk dying? I really don’t know what to do. THANKS DRAGON QUEST
EDIT: got it to uninstall and cleared the download cache. that seemed to fix steam. now I’m installing again on another disk

I played up until the big end-of-tutorial moment where you get the anime-style theme song opener. This game is great so far! The voice acting is startlingly good, the best that I can recall hearing in any game.
The main character’s whole look is truly atrocious. My gf and I were trying to come up with a suitably 90’s name for this terrible boy with his trashed up haircut. The z-list washed up disney channel celeb at the center of my quest is now known as Tyler.

Oh boy the opening hours of this are really, really well done. Just finished the first dungeon and made it to the next big new area. The quest has only begun.
Currently my hero (named Enix because I always name my DQ heroes Enix) and Erik are level 10 and hopefully going to meet the next party member soon. The dungeon was a bit of a challenge because I haven’t really gone out of my way to fight enemies much. Occasionally I’ll stop and fight when I see a new one that I haven’t seen yet but mostly I just run past them. I think this is the right way for me to play, easy overworld exploration/hard dungeoning. Just push forward until the game pushes back.
Lots of little quality of life improvements too that make the overall experience of playing a Dragon Quest in 2018 much smoother.
My current bottom line review is: Eight was Great but Eleven is Heaven
We’ll see how well that holds up over the long run.

I like how the second party member looks a lot more like a typical Dragon Quest protagonist than the main guy
Is this going to be a main plot point
I turned the terrible music off and now the game feels like it’s badly trying to hide its loneliness by having constant voiceover. I might turn voices off too for a pure zen experience.

I kinda like the main guy. We got a Trunks, not a Goku, from Toriyama this time, and that is fine by me. We have a lot of Gokus in RPGs already. Plus the first additional character you get is a Goku. So whatever. Plus that purple.
I am pretty good with the soundtrack as well. It feels right to me.
This is me, the guy who is perfectly content with DQ games.
