this is the only time I will endorse a remake of any game under any circumstances
I may have mentioned this before, but the wife choice surprised me in how moralized it was. Normally these are a break for the player to express themselves, but they went out of their way to make two of the three options unpleasant caricatures of romance archetypes; I got the distinct feeling it was written as a lesson about sticking with those you know, building long-term relationships through equal friendship. Nera is absurdly demure, you have money as a motivator, which portends bad things in a fairy tale like this, and it hardly balances against your history with [other].
And then, yeah, sight unseen Deborahâs cool, but they make her mean.
DS version of DQV is âsimply the bestâ
admittedly I have played none of the other versions. I have hard time believing theyâre better though, maybe itâs just my affection for the beautiful low poly 3D backgrounds over SNES sprites and PS2⌠smudge. itâs also so snappy, everything happens just quickly enough.
What with all the hype about Builders on Switch and having just completed Heroes 2, I am sort of hankering for more DQ action.
I am guessing the general consensus here is that 6 isnât worth it? Is 9 still worth playing without the online features?
Rocket Slime seems a bit expensive on Amazon but I might give that one a shot
Also last night I dreamed that I went to the local anime store to pick up a preorder of DQ11, and I was slightly embarrassed because I just happened to be wearing a Dragon Quest tshirt and thought it made me look like some crazy fanatic. Then I got worried because it looked like I accidentally ordered a Japanese language copy.
Anyway according to my dream it is a pretty good game, highly recommended

9 is too short and easy and the postgame is a lot of random dungeon seeds and MMO crap! but you can dress up your characters so i still beat it 3 times :B

I went with Debora on my first playthrough and didnât regret it. Unlike the other wives, she goes through a bit of a character development and realizes she needs and respects you by the end, even if she doesnât show it enough. It felt teasing, sure, but also a fair option, and she clearly has her fans.

6 is totally not worth it. 9 is OK-ish but not great.
6 is very bad. Do not play 6.
I played the first little bit of 6 on SFC and itâs got primo late 16-bit Square-style sprites and upon your first step out of your home youâre greeted with a lens flaring sun in the sky, so it at least has that going for it.
Without having played it (lol selectbutton amirite) the vibe I get from 6 is that itâs the most aggressive Toriyama-esque of them all. I say aggressive here in the sense of Dragon Ball, edgier, more violent, more teenager atmosphere.
Why isnât there a Dr Slump RPG and if there is one why does it suck. Cuz if it was good Iâd probably know about it already.
Also re: Dragon Quest recs I always say playing the first one in an emulator on fast forward is worthwhile cuz you can knock it out in a few hours. It is a nice game.

I played the first three on my phone and the first one was rebalanced to not be such a grind. It was a pretty satisfying phone game. All three were in fact. I still need to finish III. Iâm at the end but Iâm not strong enough yet to beat the big bad.
V is probably the best one next to VIII/VII (depending on your preference for length) but I think IV probably doesnât get enough love. I havenât played it myself but I hear itâs more episodic which would make it ideal for playing in short bursts. That way you can put it down for a month or whatever at a time and not be totally lost story-wise each time you return.

Why would you go about changing game engines just for an international version of your game of this size? (probably has something to do with the Switch version that keeps getting delayed)

Still real weird that theyâre still only adding voice acting to the western versions of these games but I kind of respect their reasoning (I think it was @Father.Torque who once complained about this very problem about adding voice acting to RPGs on an old SBcast?)
RPG Site: The Japanese release of Dragon Quest XI did not contain any voice acting, but this new western release does. What lead to the decision to add English voice acting?
Takeshi Uchikawa: Thereâs a couple of aspects that lead to this decision. One is the main Dragon Quest games that released in Japan did not have voice acting, and thatâs what the Japanese audience is used to. Additionally, Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest XIâs lead writer) often changes the scenario and story up until the very last minute and tries to do all these things to make it better and develop it further. That means that there isnât a lot of time to do recording and we want to get the game out to Japanese players as quickly as possible. Keeping the voice acting out helps to get the game finished more quickly. However by the time it came to the US, everything with the script was already finalized and there werenât going to be anymore last-minute story changes. So that was why we decided to go ahead and put the voice acting in the English version.

Hikari Kubota: Dragon Quest is a game in which even in translation we try to give a different feel to each of the worlds. Kind of a different regional feel, so thatâs where changing the names started because obviously in different places and different languages, itâs going to feel differently. In order to keep that, we decided to change some of the names.
Because thereâs so many different areas and regions within the game, each one has been given a very strong regional feel to it. Specifically, in the case of Camus to Erik, itâs because we wanted him to seem Scandinavian. To Japanese people, the name Camus comes across as Scandinavian but thatâs obviously not going to work for English speakers so we decided on Erik. It wasnât just off the cuff. We wanted it to seem like his name matched the region he was from.
