In general the auto-chest is awesome. Never having to worry about not being able to pick stuff up is great. So is being able to use anything in your chest anytime you craft (so it doesn’t have to specifically be in your inventory).
First PS4 battle footage afaik. Looks like it starts after some menu selection was already made. Conspicuously absent is confirmation of seamless battle/field.
I just found out there is a PS2 version of Dragon Quest V that was fan translated. I think I will check it out. My save file got deleted when I played the DS version and i haven’t revisited it yet.
Just finished Dragon Quest V. Pretty awesome game, probably ranks up there with my favourite JRPGs.
The smaller scale of the narrative compared to other RPGs was pretty effective. Most of the memorable moments were fairly small emotional moments rather than big epic fantasy pizzazz. At the same time it feels like a whole hell of a lot happened in the 30 hours I played, compared to DQVII where I am 40 hours in and it feels like it is still just starting up.
The ending does one of my favourite JRPG things, which is letting you wander around after the final battle and just chat to everyone. Was kinda hoping for another time jump to show the kids grown up and the hero all grizzled and old, but I guess you can’t have everything.
I didn’t really bother so much with the monster recruiting in the last third of the game, so my final monster squad ended up being the Sabre tiger, slime knight and a regular old slime.
Not sure if I will bother with the optional post game dungeon, since I have a stack of other games to get through. I got Dragon Quest IV coming in the mail soon and DQVIII comes out later this month so I guess I have a lot more grinding exp from slimes to look forward to
Finally finished Dragon Quest VII. Took me 76 hours 53 minutes, which is about 25 hours less than what I expected from all I heard about the game.
Pretty cool game, but definitely could have done with some being about 25 hours shorter still. Too many times it felt like it was intentionally dragging things out by sending you on countless trips back and forth through the same dungeons, or carrying out errands that took you back and forth between a few places for no other reason than to increase the length even further.
Also the fact that the battle system never really gets out of “set everyone to autofight” mode until the final dungeon is a bit of a bummer, but I guess if the game was more difficult I might have just given up.
Anyway, looks like I finished the game just in time for the release of Dragon Quest VIII, so I guess that one is next up. Although I also have DQIV that arrived a week or so ago from Amazon…
DQ8 on Android is pretty interesting. It’s played in vertical mode and that works better than expected. After like an hour or two I fell in love with the control scheme. It’s all one handed and takes a lot of tedium out of the battles. There is no constant pressing of a button for attack and instead you get a menu before every turn where you can give the orders. Most of the time you can just leave it on the default setting of “fight wisely” and succeed. For some boss encounters you need to micro manage if you’re not ridiculously over leveled, which makes sense. You can save regularly in towns, at the churches and also quicksave out in the field and dungeons. So that’s perfect for pick up and play whenever you’ve got five minutes. I feel like this port respects my time. It’s very convenient and I’d actually rather play the game like this than the original on PS2 (even emulated on PC) because of the extra features.
It looks really good and sharp and runs perfectly. No slowdown or anything like that. Of course you can pirate it, so check it out if you’re even vaguely interested!
Put in 8 hours into DQIV, and enjoying it. It’s breezy as expected. Just started the fourth chapter; the previous chapter with Torneko lived up to its hype. Eager to see how all the separate threads link up.
I do have to say I’m disappointed in the DS remakes in how visually homogeneous they are. The original IV-V-VI all featured different levels of graphical detail, if not style. Having played V on DS previously, feels like I’ve already seen 90% of these assets. The narrative and charm will sustain this playthrough, but I’ll probably pass on VI.
One funny thing I noticed in DQ8 is that when you are walking around outside, you can hear the horse and cart moving somewhere behind you, but you can never see it. So now I just imagine the main character walking around making those noises himself like in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
