I dabbled with MSX a bit to play some castlevania, but that is all so far. I need to check out gradius, etc. I also need to play aleste 2.
check out space manbow, too!!!
if you want period-accurate slowdown, leave settings default
if you want as buttery smooth gameplay as you can get, switch the core to turbo mode(!!)
itās so good
edit: oh right you definitely need to try goonies for MSX
Yeah, so many good konami games on MSX. I agree, I gotta try goonies!
Popping in to say that the Mister is pretty neat. Iāve said before that I love the Super Nt (my first real exposure to the SNES, outside of occasionally playing it as a kid and messing with SNES9X in high school and college) and the Mega Sg, but the idea of continuing to buy Analogueās (admittedly very nice!) hardware, ehhhh.
I just slapped mine into a cheap acrylic case I got off of etsy, which was a reassuring way to find out that one of the USB ports on the USB hub isnāt supposed to work, I guess?
I need to actually try and play stuff outside of my usual emulation wheelhouse now that itās open to me. The old computer stuff, mostly.
But yeah, Iāve had minimal issues with it and itās just so goddamn snappy. I think the only slowdown Iāve had with it is due to not properly organizing my rom files (and even then, it zips through them a lot faster than the Pi tends to).
Now I just need to pick a game and stick with it. Driving myself insane playing Soukoban World right now.
Somethingās brewing
As someone with a looser understanding of the tech, what is the ceiling on misterās capabilities right now? Is it running turn of the millennium arcade fighting games feasible? Iām resisting naming specific games because I donāt want to over complicate it by goofing and confusing CPS3 stuff with Naomi stuff (which I assume is too complicated with multiple specialized processors for 3D and the like).
Are we going to see a next gen model in a couple years that handles latter ā2Dā (to sound as general as possible) stuff or is coding all this stuff more the barrier?
saturn is technically possible but an extreme undertaking. there hasnāt been any progress that i know of.
ps1 is making good progress, could release in playable form this year
n64 is beyond the limit due to high clock speeds. probably wouldnāt fit either.
every arcade board has to be implemented individually, and in the case of such hardware there are often significant unknowns which make FPGA implementation more challenging. that said, most of the biggest multi-software boards are getting attention, with CPS1, & CPS1.5 stuff already implemented from Capcom and a core in development for Sega System 16 as well. iād be remiss not to reference again the aforementioned CPS2 core that is already making good progress
neo geo games from 2000 on already play on MiSTer, DoDonPachi runs great. newer hardware starts getting dramatically more difficult to implement
anyway what MiSTer already does is more than a lifetime of enjoyment, itās unreal. everything else is just extremely cherry on top afaic
wouldnāt hold my breath for a worthy successor to the MiSTer for at least two more years. itās in an extremely sweet spot right now
Oh, makes sense about the varied game specific arcade boards being an issue. CPS2 and DoDonPachi working is pretty wild.
Thanks!
my dream is the namco system 11 stuff - if psx works, that stuff should almost certainly work as well and the hardware has a lot of commonality
one can dream anyway!
I bet the N64 (and the DS) will eventually get an FPGA implementation, but I think it will require several times more effort than any currently supported or in-progress core. That, and I suspect that itāll require a bigger, faster FPGA than the one on the current MiSTer.
my referral code is working again for misteraddons.com
hit it up baby, 10% off
61% percent logic utilization already? oof. i feel like this is gonna cut it close.
regardless of that, this makes me feel like someoneās gonna put the gruntwork into the n64 soon, even if the complete package isnāt yet viable on current hardware

since i got my mister, i barely play anything else, itās just the best most convenient thing. i know i just talk it up on here constantly, but holy shit itās the best. i have gone full firebrandx and calculated custom aspect ratios for all the console cores now so everything is āpixel perfectā with no interpolation and itās justā¦ wow.
i was playing game gear and that console has a pixel aspect ratio of 4:3 right, cool. however some games like tempo jr. look better with a square, 1:1 pixel aspect ratio (there are round objects in the game that appear stretched at the original aspect ratio).
iāve got it set up so i can just switch between them now with a menu option. itās so goddamn good. iām sorry. iām gonna keep doing this.
i pretty much wake up and am like, hm, do i have enough time to mess around with a game boy game on my CRT before work? and the answer with MiSTer is always āyesā - itās so snappy and quick to get to whatever youāre trying to do. you can switch between controllers, mappings, autofire on/off/speed, games, cores, scaler resolutions, aspect ratios and more once youāve gotten things set up. itās justā¦ wonderful.
when iām going to sleep, i have to constantly ask myselfā¦ do i need to fall asleep right away, or can i put on a sega master system game and zone out in bed before just shutting off the CRT and setting the controller on the bedside table? the mister draws minimal power so i donāt even have to shut it offā¦
makes me feel like a goddamn kid again, excited to play videogamesā¦ weird
itās not all perfect, and itās too much to talk about to ever give a convincing snapshot, but i meanā¦ itās incredible. iām also unsure if talking about the MiSTer will mean anything to a lot of people. however, iām quite sure that as more people get their hands on one and have a chance to try it out, its infamy will expand rapidly. it really does have to be felt and seen and heard to be believed!
Would actually like to hear more about this.
I for one at least like reading your Mister musings a lot.
