FPGA World Tour

i feel like mister is the kind of thing I’m going to ignore for like three years and then I’m going to be scrolling through something unrelated one day and I’ll see a video or an article that’s going to basically amount to “this thing is now functionally perfect and represents the emulation end game for anyone willing to step up from free,” and that will be a good day.

If anyone here wants an Analogue Mega Sg you should probably order it soon.
The USA color scheme just went out of stock.
The Japan color scheme is now the only version in stock.

10 hours later the Analogue Mega Sg is now completely out of stock.
You cannot currently buy any systems from Analogue.

DoDonPachi core released for MiSTer

Been waiting so long for this!

MiSTer has 100% stripped me of any vestigial desire for existing Analogue products, sheesh… talk about your all-in-one retro device. it’s seriously the most exciting device out there right now for my money. sexbox and ps5 can sit right down lol

the Pocket is the only one that still makes any sense to me, we’ll see how that plays out. if there’s a point where you can just… buy one, that’d be cool. not a guarantee given Analogue’s past behavior

That or hoping for a mister portable. Saw someone on youtube working on one. Had to get the mega sg as an aesthetically appealing idealized genesis clone playing effortlessly on modern tv but yeah it’s hard to justify with analogue’s artificial scarcity/weird positioning as the Apple of luxury FPGA stuff.

I agree the pocket is definitely the only analogue product that looks like it has anything even to say to the mister

I also wish I could get a better sense of where FPGA lithography is at and how much these are expected to improve in the next decade – it doesn’t seem like any fabs are using 7nm capacity to make these right now (though Intel may have actually wanted to with their recent acquisitions, they’ve had their own problems) and I have no idea where the baseline consumer offering of something that can in effect emulate all the same platforms as a Pentium II could, stacks up against future or higher end FPGAs

it’s a lot of speculation right now! i do think at the very least MiSTer is a very safe bet right now, there isn’t anything even remotely close to that sweet spot of price/availability/support

i think in about 3-5 years you might see something truly sensational…

yeah, that’s what I’m thinking too – now that I have the retrotink I’m keeping an eye on what the open source support for the pocket winds up looking like, but figuring that a second generation of whatever might be more interesting anyway

and retroarch is supporting those Chinese android devices upstream now too which makes the lower end market a lot less of a mess

is there a Tl;dr Edition of the mister that can be bought, what’s the simple&clean way of getting one

@Grandpa and myself bought from here

my first unit was bum and he was able to replace it, not a big deal
you pay a little extra this way as opposed to building it yourself, but he has all the best cases. so good, they are actually all sold out currently, but more should be showing up before long

who’s into GOLD baby

I second how great the mister is. I need to find the time to play around with the c64, msx, and amiga cores more. I’ve spent most of my time with the genesis/sega cd and pc-engine /cd-rom cores.

highly recommend the MSX core. konami games play like a dream
