Circus Charlie core.

2 mister clones!

I really need to update and get the patches so I can play all the n64 games.

Damn this is a sign I should have done my clown telethon…

the patches are most likely getting integrated with the mister main in a few days so you probably don’t even need to do this

if you wanted to be able to play all the patched games now, install this MiSTer main (in /media/fat) and N64-database.txt (in …/games/N64):

and all relevant games will be autopatched

edit: hopefully should be getting merged soon

For folks wondering about the clone boards, this video goes into a ton of detail for the little differences between the QMTech on AliExpress and the DE-10 Nano.

Sounds like if you don’t really care about having a case, or analog video or a built-in USB hub board, you’re probably OK with the QMTech board in a pinch.

The Taki Mister I guess is going up for sale throughout the day on Friday, so heads up.

Edit: If anyone is grabbing one and needs a controller suggestion (I doubt that applies to anyone here, I’m sure we’re all inundated with controllers, but), I have two of these hooked up, and they do the trick:

on one hand, FPGA emulation is a niche of a niche of a niche and specifically targeted by perverts who want accuracy instead of ā€œI turn on the doohickey and it play gameā€ so I have doubts that the SEO on the name makes a huge difference

on the other hand, calling it the ā€œMister Piā€ is actually the most cynical hijacking of said SEO I can think of

I think a big part of Rudie and I dunking on the name is that Taki absolutely bristles at any confrontation, so when he held a poll as to whether he should change the name or not, people voted overwhelmingly against keeping the Mister Pi branding, and…yeah, haha.

People who are in on it are absolutely gonna know what it is. I doubt any of the Raspberry Pi faithful will be mislead. But there’s probably some nonzero amount of folks somewhere in the middle who are gonna think this thing can play Dreamcast games or whatever a Pi 4 can do with that label.

Man, I follow this project pretty closely and I still always forget the name for the project.

honestly branding the boxes and manuals with the Master System grid is a bigger misstep than the name

Video Game Esoterica did a build video of the Taki Udon Mister:

I still don’t understand why he named it the MISTer Pi initially. Is it powered by a Raspberry Pi??? Is it related to a Raspberry Pi? Some kinda MISTer-ajacent product that uses the Pi? That’s all I questioned when I first heard it out of context, and that’s all I wonder even now.

I guess the word pi has now been cargo-culted to mean single board computer.

yeah the original was ā€œraspberryā€ after early british home computers apricot, acorn, tangerine, and ā€œpiā€ for python interpreter which has since been broadly coopted to indicate single board computer products like orange pi, banana pi, rock pi, clockwork pi

the mister pi launch has so far been conducted and communicated in the same idiosyncratic way as his other weird social media influencer endeavours, if you want a clone that isn’t short-run preorder fomo nonsense from Shady YouTube Guy the QMTECH board seems like the way to go

the all-in-one consolized and handheld mister products he claims to have in development will be interesting to follow, hopefully those generate some affordable competition if they do materialize

trip report:

I pre made an account, did my shipping address ahead of time

batch goes live, I get the deluxe big man kit in my cart, wait through a short checkout queue

site goes ā€œhey your address is wrong, fix itā€

the website does not accept my zip code, in regular person form or in 9 digit detailed postal form, not even the zip code that the address lookup auto populated

I figure out the trick of adding a new address and that works and big boy kit has gone out of stock in the interim, implying the queue didn’t reserve stock for X amount of time. so did the tinier boy kit

at this point I just shrug and grab a mainboard and a memory module, which are somehow still in stock… 5 minutes? after the batch opened

very positive experience

(I really don’t care too much as long the thing comes and works and I can play whatever bad old game I’m trying to gaslight people with)

That oughta work. The main board and RAM are the most important components by far, though the USB board is nice to shove a bunch of dongles and such into. Nothing a USB hub can’t fix.

I think arcade Splatterhouse finally got a public release…I really oughta update my Mister.

I wanted the kit more for the analog AV board but I should be able to get any generic one and not the Mister Pi branded one at any point and also I’m pretty sure using my VGA monitor will end in my untimely death considering the smell coming from it the last time I used it

Hopefully just a roach crawled in there and got crispy.
