FPGA World Tour

you know, i just realized the Saroo has a feature that’s so excellent, i’m considering getting one to replace my action replay 4-in-1, which is per-game saves… that’s so nice, the most annoying thing about saturn is having to juggle the inherently limited amount of save space you have, especially when stuff like NiGHTs A-Life or SimCity 2000 or whatever wants to hog most of the internal memory for itself

also also, saroo makes stuff like this viable which is… wild

SSSS (Solid-State Sega Saturn)

I wonder if they could fit the expansion cart in sideways with like a 90° pin adapter to make it even more flush

this would be sick, esp if the top rested at the edge for easy access to the SD card

I got it downloaded! But since I am always controller only harder to enjoy the computer stuff.

I fooled around some more with the SAROO yesterday. I got my first sound distortion since updating the firmware. Get this, it was never a firmware issue to begin with. It was simply a matter of a poor connection. I ejected and reinserted the cart and everything worked perfectly again.

Now I gotta start thinking seriously about what I want to devote my time to.

yeah one of the most annoying potential complications of the Saturn is doing anything cart related because of how bad that slot is

I’m reading about how to improve connectivity (conductivity?) with the slot and does this sound like a terrible idea to anyone?

You just need to clean it. If you have a hair dryer, use that in it to get the pins to relax a little (hair dryers should not get hot enough to melt solder unless you try really hard.)

Actually, I think I’m going to try this screw trick first. When have british retro youtubers ever been wrong?

More searching for solutions. I may just be doomed.

Have you also been experiencing sound issues? I’m starting to think the specific hardware revision I have might be the problem.

It’s fully possible there are a lot of different Saturns.

Looks like you can get a discless frankenstein Saturn for 130 bucks now on Aliexpress.

i have not personally experienced any sound issues, no. i had Baroque crash on me when it was loading a new stage, but i have read this can be fixed with changing parameters for loading in the config file.

it does seem like there are a lot of different production runs of the Saturn, though. the Github has been pretty helpful, and the Saroo creator seems willing to help if you can provide console info to him

Yesterday, I had a manic journey troubleshooting problems and searching reddit and github. I have come to the conclusion that sound issues will happen 100% of the time with my saroo with every game, but the length of time until they start is variable. Reading github, my current hypothesis is that the VA0 is incompatible with the saroo. Probably something to do with how chips and power supply are arranged on the mother board. My current plan is to trade my gray Saturn in for a white as soon as I see one come up at my local store.

apparently the US net link is a direct p2p connection, so you can still play saturn games online to this day if two people both have a net link (this part is the rub)

i wanna play daytona and sega rally online with SBers dammit

yeah i saw something about this but the YT video i watched didn’t explain how they did it. do you need…a landline to do it? presumably it isn’t an ethernet connection, right?

i would consider getting one, for sure

Come to the next meetup. I just got Sega Rally on disc. Though I guess you wouldn’t be getting a full screen experience then.

after doing some research, it looks like there is a total of 5 games that use the netlink, and netlinks seem to go for about $100-$160 on eBay (i’m not sure if the article you linked gets into not using the Netlink at all, but can’t check until i’m not at work)

Glad I held back on getting a MISTER long enough for all these new options to be popping up soon.
