FPGA World Tour

the gba core on mister is great

it has:
2x resolution for scaled sprites (makes Mode 7-esque stuff like Mario Kart Super Circuit look nicer)
lower latency and better picture quality than even a Game Boy Player with GCDigital and Game Boy Interface (lowest latency and best picture quality of any official hardware)
2p core so you can play 2 instances side-by-side for multiplayer or Pokemon trading, etc.
save states!

so i can practice speedrun strats without having to adjust for input latency while still being able to use save states. it’s a game changer

same with PSX - having the crazy low input latency along with save states is a huge boon for speedrunning practice. i’ve been able to get way more done when grinding tricks than i was on hardware, and emu always feels off

This stopped working for me a week ago! It hangs at mame-getter . Should probably delete and reinstall update_all see if that helps but I don’t got time.

R-Type Is Out!

If you look up in this thread I was a big hater and then stupidly bought one and I love it. I would describe myself as someone who doesn’t mind Retroarch and yet!! This just lets me play the damn game. I’ve said this a dozen times before.

Like really wish the 16bit cores had save states but the moment to moment play experience is so much better than the mini consoles.

my very intense feeling re: SNES accuracy claims is ā€œput some respect on Near’s nameā€ but lookie here we got a wise guy

The PCE pinball games are games I’ve never played on original hardware. That goes for most if not all of the PCE library.

For some reason I’ve gotten my highest scores in Devil’s Crush on the mister.

I don’t know if I can chalk that up to latency or emulation accuracy, but the first few times I played it on the platform I remember thinking the game seemed a lot easier.

Maybe I’ve just gotten better?

In any event, the mister is a really cool toy that has unfortunately gotten way too expensive due to supply shortages or demand or whatever else can be blamed.

When there’s a surplus of DE-10 nanos and people can’t give them away, I’ll probably buy a second one.

I wonder about this, too. I’ve played my share of emulators, ports, mini consoles, and actual systems, and the Mister feels closer to the real deal than anything else. Definitely feels like I’m doing better on here than elsewhere.

I dunno though, I mean, I get it. It’s maybe a needlessly fancy way to play games. But honestly, I find the Mister much nicer than slamming my head against fine tuning RetroArch on my Pi 4.

Plus I can play (almost) all the Klonoa games on one little box. Miraculous.

If you want to keep track of Mister news Lu’s is the place to check. Really collects sources. Updates either every few days or weekly.

In other news MISSILE COMMAND!

got the analog IO board for the Mister set up today. did not realize i was going to also need a DAC to get sound out of it :weary: so the set up is a little wonky at the moment, but gosh, everything looks so nice on my JVC

The TOSLINK/3.5mm jack will output analog sound; I use a headphone to RCA adapter cable. Might be a dip switch or ini issue?

Just in case you are brain poisoned Analog NT is doing a Final Round of Mega SG and Super whatevers. Just get a Mister instead.

The Saturn core is still progressing.

Grandpa was saying there was a huge price jump for the complete mister kits but will say the one I got from aliexpress/theretrocastle is still a /mere/ 400 dollars.

Maybe one day the 16bit cores will add save states and stop wasting my time. Why do I even own real consoles at this point. I NEED save states.

Final run is up (or will be, shortly) for the Mega Sg/Super Nt. Just got this very dramatic email from Analogue.

Anyway, if you’re not devoted to the idea of slapping carts in a thing, better options are out there for about the same price.

Rudie swears by this one, and it’s a cool $200 cheaper than where I got mine from (well, now, anyway, I got in when the getting was still good).

yeah one of the primary motivators for getting Analogue stuff, for me, was the thought that ā€œi have a lot of carts sitting in my mom’s basement and i should probably get them someday now that i’m inarguably an adultā€

but yeah, Super NT made me fall in love with the SNES again

Oh absolutely. I never had a Super Nintendo, so the Super Nt was a thrill. Especially since (pre-pandemic) you could order Japanese versions of games that sell here for $40+ for like, $4 shipped on eBay.

I think what pushed me to the Mister was ā€œI hate fucking around with RetroArch, I want something I can easily hook up to a CRT TV, and I don’t want to keep giving Analogue hundreds of dollars for each bespoke system.ā€

That said, I do miss the nice clack of Super Famicom carts clunking around.

Guess I need to finally check out the Saturn core!

Psycho Taromaru and Asuka 120% Burning Limited work completely fine on the newest build. If it is primarily 2D it will probably work great. Played rounds of Hyper Duel and Blast Wind without a problem.

Sega Rally Championship (J) is playable but the sound cuts out. a lot of games are playable just get ready for some screaming noise followed by silence.

No Cart games work. Nor Street Fight Zero.
