there’s been a shortage of the DE-10 nano boards for a bit now, so getting a MiSTer seems a little more challenging at the moment. supposedly there are more units scheduled to be available in mid/late january on mouser/digikey
Something just arrived in the mail…
This thing is pretty cool! The screen is lovely and the modes recreating the looks of the original screens are really impressive. It seems really finicky about reading carts though.
DE-10 nano in stock on Terasic’s website:
Oh god yeah, that’s the Analogue experience right there. I can’t tell you how much time I’ve spent hunched over Super Famicom carts with a q-tip and a bottle of alcohol or some contact cleaner.
Gonna edit this and say that the shadowmasks they’ve added to some of the Mister cores are pretty neat. I really need to set up a config file that lets me do 5X scaling.
FPGAZumSpass made a clarification regarding dual sdram for MiSTer and the PSX core:
A lot of things are limited by the 1 sdram module, so having two will be the better choise if you can. Either higher FPS, 100% accurate sound, maybe things like 24bit color rendering? The possibilites are many. And honestly, i don’t see why i should limit the core to not have such options, just because some users limit themselves to CRTs? So as long as there are some ressources left when all features are in, the second sdram will have some advantages
Open to the idea of not using my CRT to play PSX stuff, less open to the idea of cracking open this aluminum case and prying off the analog IO board
I hadn’t checked in on my AVS order in a bit, and now they’re delayed til 2023.
i am ecstatic, my broken MiSTer appears to still work somehow. classic electronics, wait a few months and try again and suddenly it works?? i am going to try and get one of those s-video adapters and plug it into the CRT in my living room for tate games
I’m guessing CD music is still in progress? Impressive nonetheless!
I made a quick script for the MiSTer for the Adafruit MacroPad RP2040. I can do all the menu stuff I need with this little thing now instead of plugging in a keyboard.
Feels like every other update they mess with the shadow masks and I wind up with a bunch of empty ditectories or they move shit around at random.
They’re neat but I kinda wish they could stick to something. Oh well.
Yeah the directory layout is surprisingly one of the worst things about the whole project, theres no documentation about where anything should go (that I could find) and it changes without warning
I’ve never been able to figure this out (mostly because I’ve always been messing with ini files for CRT configurations), but does anyone know how I need to go about setting one up for 5X integer scaling?
Or, y’know, whatever it is you do that gives a nice picture with minimal overscan area cropping?
5x crop requires the following:
- Resolution is 1920×1080.
- vscale_border isn’t used (or vscale_border=0) in MiSTer.ini
- vscale_mode isn’t used (or vscale_mode=0) in MiSTer.ini
- forced_scandoubler=0 in MiSTer.ini
- In OSD menu Scandoubler Fx: None
then the 5x option in the core menu will be ungrayed
Weird, I’ve got everything set that way and it’s still grayed out for me. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
Oh god wait, is it because my monitor is 1080p? So it’s just perfectly scaling to it anyway? That’s…that’s it, isn’t it?
Nope! Apparently not. Doesn’t wanna work with my 4K TV either. My Mister just hates me.
Third edit, dunno what I changed, but it finally works and it looks amazing.
So sometime in the last few months video filter support got added and there are presets to make the scaled output look like a trinitron or a pvm and I finally hooked my mister up to the oled and oh my god it looks better than any real CRT I’ve seen since my childhood. I’m going to get rid of the monster HD CRT in my basement, it looks like garbage compared to this (horrible geometry, no scan lines). Well, except for the wii and ps2 over component, but those things are quite emulatable now…
Also got the PSX core going which is amazing if kind of unstable, though I have zero doubt it will be nicely polished as time goes on. I wish there was a way to incorporate the geometry correction stuff that say beetlepsx has but I can totally understand why that’s not possible.
Giddy for this thing again!! Gonna have my wife print out a case for it on one of the SLA 3D printers at work
It’s really something! I need to take the time and mess with the X86 and Mac cores, branch out from the usual consoles.
Jotego sounds like he’s got the Neo Geo Pocket Color core about 75% done. Gotta dig out my weird MVC3 PDP controller with a microswitch click stick for the closest experience I can get to playing that thing again.
