the cg intro for IV is incredible to me because it’s maybe the only case where someone took a beloved property from my youth and presented it in pretty much the exact way my mind’s eye always imagined everything, like they nailed it so hard. the DS remake is really one of the best final fantasy remakes imo.

to what extent is it possible to solo FFXIV
I’m worried if I start it’s just going to consume my life
my first big goal when i started xiv wasn’t hitting the level cap
it was getting enough gold saucer money to buy setzer’s coat
you can solo the entire game except for dungeons or bosses, but the game does matchmaking OR you have like 16 SB people you can ask for help.
i mean yeah that’s where i’m at rn (half joking)

after playing the demo i dont think any ff should be remade. id rather just put money into preservation and new products
ive just never played a remake that i liked more than the original, like re masters sometimes? i dont like reboots of movies or tv shows either maybe i only like new things

i’m actually surprised they haven’t tried “amano but 3d” because the bits of it they do in xiv work well? they adapt tons of bosses from amano’s ff3-6 concept art & they look great even in xiv’s like, 10 year old engine

oh yeah the reason i dont want final fantasy remakes is PROBABLY because final fantasy xiv revisits and remixes stuff from EVERY FINAL FANTASY, so I get my cool 3d amano art, i fought kefka, i fought ruby weapon, i fought quezecoatl, i hung out with ultros, i went up the crystal tower, i can wear clouds clothes and ride his motorcycle
and i think riding clouds motorcycle around an open world while the motorcycle song plays was more rewarding to my sense of nostalgia than seeing every detail of clouds shoulder armor or watching people excuse racism because it was that way originally
the yakuza series took out transphobic shit because they realized it was shitty…this whole ‘faithful to the original’ copout is like people who translate games 1:1 and dont take into account anything culturally happening currently. everyone here was grossed out when that person put the t slur in their game, why does barrett get a pass for remaining this over the top angry short fuse stereotype? anyways I hope its because they turn it on its head later.

Yeah I’m not quite sure why I should suddenly be retroactively okay with '90s racism or them choosing to double down on it in the remake but I also didn’t play FFVII when I was 14 so I guess I’m not an expert here
He came off like a caricature even back then, his attitude/dialogue still seems to reflect a bit more of a culture gap than comfortable, but the character after that (guilt, Marlene, focus) fortunately adds more definition…so historically, you see a lot of people drawn towards him as something on an inclusive marker.

im fully willing to admit im missing context, and im not a fan ( i dont hate ff7 i hate what its marketing here did to games). it just felt uncomfortable. i would not play that game in front of my brother
(i am definitely hoping they flesh barrett out! it was a lot to stomach)
