about 3-5 depending on how well you remember it
you can beat the bosses by spending all of your money on grenades and putting everyone in the back row, no grinding (or really engaging with random battles) required

Plus you can just look up the correct choices for the dress part if you want to personally get selected by Corneo even though it doesn’t actually save you that much time (as I recall you have to fight through like two rooms to get to him if you don’t get selected).
7 and 9 are far quicker than 8 or anything after that still, they’re pretty nice to return to
9 is fuckin glacial
yeah ok I think I’ve made clear enough times that’s my own personal final fantasy critical blind spot
Yeah I love 7 and 9, probably because the Materia system in 7 is similar to the Ability system in 9. Though 9’s is set up so each character has more of their own specific role to play in battle whereas in 7 everyone can be made to do everything if you want. 9 is more restrained in that sense, and a lot more nostalgic if you have memories of the earlier games (for instance using a tent on the world map shows your characters camping out in an actual tent).
I started replaying Midgar myself but haven’t gone back to finish it. Even without a guide it’s short enough to take just a few evenings if you’re not in a rush. But I’ve played it enough to still remember all the major points the remake hits.
look I’m sorry but you really must emulate
that is priced in to any recommendation
I’m not digging up a PS1 BIOS again, I’m done with that sort of thing for life
Meanwhile, making my way through FF7 Crisis Core (emulated and looking surprisingly great at 1080p because it’s the one UMD I have that I can’t find). Like it for the most part, but boy these voices are not good and also I think this makes me all the more grateful for how they portrayed Aerith in the remake.
i was never able to get into FFIX. i just…couldn’t care about the characters and i didn’t really like its aesthetics. i restarted a few times, even.
i will give it another shot, one day.
is playing on a PS1 the best experience or are the HD remasters worth a gander?
This was my experience until last summer, after a decade of attempts at getting a playthrough going. It has a lot of visual charm, but the first few hours are kinda blah in my opinion. I really liked Vivi’s story. I came to enjoy it more as it went on, but the main story really never resonated with me all that much. Which is a shame, because I like a whole lot of what it’s doing otherwise.
FF7 Remake should’ve been done in FFIX’s engine. Textures mapped onto polygons was all the people really wanted.
the remasters are probably the easiest way to access them but imo the HD Sharp 3d models on top of blurry 240p prerendered backgrounds looks horrible
also (imo) PSX FF backgrounds all look oversaturated and garish without scanlines. i was replaying FF7 earlier this year and the whole moody midgar vibe was off until i found a good CRT+scanline shader for my emulator. i’m not always a scanlines purist but those games were definitely designed around that constraint
i didn’t know i gave much of a shit about scanlines and now i’d rather be dead than play ffvii without them
definitely emulate
I wouldn’t play any game on a PS1 unless I also had a 20 year old tv to play them on.
careful what you wish for my wife is really upset
between how bad these remasters and ports tend to be & how bad my retroarch experience has been lately have legit considered retrieving the trinitron I left at my mother’s
Tell her I already have a 20 years old tv.
If they open the border between washington and bc you are not allowed to suddenly show up outside my apartment and yell italianly at me to take it off your hands
