yeah there are fun differences between my english subtitles and french dialogue as well (though I catch maybe 50% of them)
to be fair this seems like a really difficult thing to translate into english

It’s the most casual form of thanking in Japanese (in the usual big hierarchy of increasingly formal and extended phrases), but has long lost any connotations that the speaker is especially familiar with the foreign or anything. So there aren’t tricky metacultural problems, if that’s what you’re thinking of.
Working back what might’ve led to the call, the first thing to note is that it’s a false friend – “thank you” is slightly formal in English, so the most literal basic translation would be “thanks!”. But then in terms of voice acting, such a snippy single syllable can’t be enthusiastically extended like “saaaaan kyuuuu”, so you lose connotations there. “My hero!” plays up the enthusiasm more than the original but it’s smarter to bias in the overdoing direction to have personality.

yeah, in chinese it comes off as like almost self deprecating but i am having a hard time trying to explain why lol. and i assumed it was the same in japanese. maybe not identical, but sounds similar.

apparently those rumors were untrue, but it’s absolutely the case that all of squenix was in total disarray during the transition from ps2 hardware to ps3. Like it’s definitely not entirely Nomura’s fault that the game didn’t leave preproduction in 6 years, the biggest interruption to work was when they made that ff7 e3 demo that apparently took 6 months for 30 seconds of animation.

i gotta say, i get a little wary when people start blasting nomura for being an absolute incompetent or whatever, because i mostly enjoy his stuff and i refuse to believe everything i like about his work is either a fluke or he had nothing to do with

It’s been buried in FF7 news but a few months ago a westerner who works for SE said that he thinks Nomura works really fast actually and that his games take a long time “due to elements out of his control”. He used an example of a level design problem the team had been struggling with for weeks that they showed to Nomura, who proceeded to solve it in 15 minutes. I wish I could find the article.

I liked World Ends With You but more for the touching and tapping battles and being able to run around a very stylized Shibuya. It was hard for me to distinguish his characters in TWEWY from his later/teenaged chain and leather clothed Kingdom Hearts cast.
