as rad as it is that avalanche are radical ecoterrorists who willingly kill civilians to further their goals, it was always pretty dissonant with the rest of the story and tone.
it would have been more interesting for them to keep that aspect and write around the moral ambiguity instead of just retconning or whatever but I don’t think it’s that unreasonable of a move
Ideally, it’s a source of friction in the group and characters have different opinions! that reveal their personality! and leave opportunities for change!
Oh, for sure, but I’m not sure what the bomb even did in the demo, the power didn’t black out until the entire reactor blew up at shinra’s behest.
Like at least a moderately dangerous action like blacking out a 7th of the city in a single attack would be morally defensible but still more than the entirely empty symbolic gesture that they appeared to have committed had shinra not intervened.
Would have been more fun if they had actually WITNESSED their big bad bomb going off in a piddly little ‘piffff’ and doing maybe three hours’ worth of repairs in damage, and then Heidegger showing up and being like “you call that an explosion? hahahahaha THIS IS AN EXPLOSION” and blowing the whole thing to hell right in front of them
Like that scene in LOTR where the orc impales himself on the sword MORE, just to intimidate
i’m not going to play this demo before the full game but I am looking forward to the digital foundry tech breakdown video that will result from its release
i liked the combat more than i expected but the very claustrophobic camera had me wondering where i was getting hit from a lot of the time. the whole thing sure is pretty tho. i have some gripes about the sfx and music but that might just be me getting fussy about nostalgia. like blending bits of one winged angel into the intro music is kind of confusing to me? did we all need to be reminded “yes, this is the video game where a choir yells sephiroth at me.” also baffled by barret delivering every line with pro wrestler intensity but at least it seems like that’s on purpose?
they don’t do a great job of explaining this but you can hit L2 to bring up barret’s menu without switching to him
i predict in six and one half years they will release a newly remastered 8k edition for PS5 now with Conclusion Content which is a FMV digest of all subsequent events and then a final Limit->Omnislash prompt
I came in expecting to be annoyed by Barret, but nah, this sold me on him. Dude is just hyped all the time. He cuts a promo on Cloud on an elevator. He just wants to run the hardest stable and doesn’t trust the guy just there on a short term contract yet. He’s worried Cloud isn’t gonna watch out for the Young Lions hard enough. Basically, PuroBarret is great.
Sure, he’s kinda annoying and man, any serious moment is gonna be undercut by it, but whatever.
If I say that I can’t tell if Barret is a worse black guy stereotype than Cloud is an emo white boy stereotype then I am allowed to play this game, right?
Edit: sorry, I am just really disgusted by the stereotypes in this game and I didn’t know how to post about it without being ridiculous
trash, has none of the atmosphere and weight of the original. Sorely disappointing that the “classic” mode isn’t actually turn-based, Uematsu’s score barely audible and sounds shittier, neither excels at being an accomplished action experience or an improvement on the original. I’ll still buy it on day one
boy howdy there are a lot of camera pull aways to show the reactor in the demo. its very REMEMBER THIS ANGLE? WELL IT’S THE SAME BUT BETTER
barrett is so fucking hotheaded and coletrained out the ENTIRE TIME. he will NOT STOP YELLING. he is VERY ANGRY and his voice sucks but you cant play in japanese in the demo. anyway cloud comes off as WAY cooler because of barretts bullshit, they just did him dirty.
the way they introduced cloud was definitely a symptom of 20 years of cloud winning COOLEST VIDEOGAME CHARACTER on gamefaqs. there’s a part where jesse and biggs and wedge are talking about what an amazing cool guy strife is, but then while youre playing they treat you like shit and keep making you do grunt work, its SUPER JARRING
i wish there the screen did something before fights, like i want the PSSSHHHH and the blurry screen, or just something. dudes on the ground that you mash buttons at is whatever, but i KNOW the combat system isnt marketed towards me so i wont complain that much. i like seamless fights in yakuza because its a beat em up, which i guess is what all jrpgs are now
jesse has shitty boob armor but the rest of her outfit is cool. also she lays the I WANNA FUCK CLOUD on really thick
the scorpion boss fight made no sense and i cant imagine how a single boss fight will translate to that battle system,my guess is mash mash mash til it flips over then do your strong mashes or something. classic mode is just ‘watch cloud play worse than you and use some powers sometimes’
the scorpion fight felt like e3 2006 bullshit, the fight got interrupted four times so you could watch quick camera cuts of the scorpion jumping around and doing rail slides or some shit? WHY DOES IT HAVE TO HAVE A CUTSCENE IN THR MIDDLE OF A BOSS FIGHT FOUR TIMES way to ruin the tension of a timer going down
the reactor remix was alright tho
i like aerises loose hair strands
i like cloud saying ‘whatever’ to barrets constant TAKE THAT SUCKER comments when hes shooting people
i like how people dematerialize into the aether stream when you kill them
also what is with the Metroid other m/god hand camera angles
