Final Fantasy 7: The Original, The Remake, The Legacy

Okay, but that’s by definition not really how I’d take the potency of such wording. I think you’re using the term to elaborate a kind of artful subversion case, which I’m not saying isn’t at play in the arc of the game, cleverly or showing strong craft at points. I just highly disagree with the cost of how it dances then lands the whole thing, and there’s big questions on getting a free pass for some vague post modern framing into liberating upheaval.

FF7R asks the audience to care about Biggs, Jessie, and Wedge way more than they do about Sephiroth, and I think that’s fascinating as a kind of subversion of the original.

I’m not saying that it’s good that the finale was so bad, but that it’s revealing of where the scenario writers’ interests actually lay. They seem as frustrated as I am by the nostalgia trap, so the parts that feel most fully wrought in this remake are the parts that pass without a trace in the original.

Ultimately, despite the endgame blunders, the scenario writers have a healthy relationship to FF7, far more so than they did back in the days of Advent Children.

That it also asks us about those characters at times, with literal writers hands on screen pushing buttons, that is something many of us would detect and deride often times purely for writing’s sake - in other popular media where those hands are unseen.

Sephiroth appears numerous times in front of Cloud, being extra cryptic in the bombastic finale - so whether setting him up as less of a villain now…or say they’d resembled the original with him barely present (seen) whatsoever in Midgar - we’re not supposed to get much development either way? You might even see B J and W more in the original at this point (though yes, much shallower support roles for Avalanche than a looming Seph)

Yes I was feeling that way, but do they really? More of a wait and see thing to gauge that one, because it’s entirely flippable. I’ll have to come back to it.

I swear to god if they have total freedom to do fanservice rewrites and still let Jessie die…

advent children and other compilation of ff7 games re-cast cloud as a dreamy pretty boy and while that’s still going on here it’s nice to see a masc character in a videogame who’s jacked but not grotesque like kratos or a mortal kombat character, but cloud is originally described as “too skinny” and i feel like ff7r is square enix just absolutely crushing the uncanny valley. if you go back and play a game from three years ago, people look like porcelain skinned mannequins with lips like the puppets in The Dark Crystal.

If you are less familiar with the supplemental FF7 content and want a deeper understanding of what the hell is going on, this 2.5 hour episode of Spoiler Mode from Easy Allies is highly insightful (the juicy bits start at 26:00)

Mostly skimmed through this vid and what can I say, kinda neat that everyone’s on the same page about the spectres but when it goes into all that Advent Children lore and ‘where will they go from here’ stuff I kind of tune out because that’s exactly what Square should not elaborate on.

I would like to continue playing the ff7 remake without ever having to actively think about Crisis Core (lol fat fucking chance on this one probably) or Advent Children or Dirge of Cerberus

Director Takayoshi Nakazato said that he was a big fan of the PC game Half-Life and wanted to turn it into an RPG, and he has done so, in the form of Dirge of Cerberus.

what was the last internally developed Square/Squeenix game that had a traverse-able overworld map and traverse-able towns?

DQ11 probably? Failing that, maybe World of Final Fantasy?

is DQ11’s like a separate thing or is it just a big open world like FFXV? does the 2d mode count? is World of FF actually a Tose game?
