Final Fantasy 7: The Original, The Remake, The Legacy

every single dungeon is followed up by, like, a totally unnecessary and worse dungeon of equal length

hmmm. that doesn’t echo my experience, really. like i know what you mean, but i also don’t. i just had a lot of fun hanging out with these characters again and beating the crap out of robots and cops and monsters. hell, i could have used a few more dungeons.

edit: i wish the game had multiplayer!! like it makes me want to play FFXIV, but also maybe this should the way the next FF Online game plays.

double edit: it’s also worth remembering i’m the person who came on here a few months ago and said FFXIII is one of the greatest videogames ever made so

idk, maybe that is a factor to consider

also whoever was in charge of the slowly sidestep between shit to hide loadtimes tech somehow became unleashed and decided this game would be their legacy

like they probably secretly murdered the guy in charge of the add really long hallways and elevators to hide loadtimes tech guy early in production and his corpse has only recently been discovered by squeenix janitors and hushed up

Got to the sector 5 slums as well this evening. That airbuster fight was kind of tough. I almost wiped a couple times. It’s like the battle system is so easy to just get into a groove with that you stop paying attention to it and then it’s like okay time for a boss fight get ready to micromanage every moment of it or get trashed.

I am in the camp that 13 is better than it let on, at least. The story was actually pretty good! You just wouldn’t know that from playing the game.

I honestly feel like they have great chemistry, but to each his own!

the japanese VA is way too flat for barret. trying to do this cool gruff guy kind of thing which like just doesn’t match his body language, character design, dialog, etc.

the only added dungeon I could have done without entirely was hojo’s. I thought the little ghost kiddies were fine. was a bit odd pacing there. I thought the underside plate sun-lamp section was kind of cool? interesting world building and character development happened there so it didn’t feel like complete filler.

but even at its worst the base gameplay is fun and varied enough to keep any one sequence from feeling too sloggy.

i played like 3 more hours today. this is the most fun i’ve had with a non-MMO final fantasy since 13. i took a break after the rooftop segment at the beginning of the sector 5 slums because it was fucking adorable and i wanna enjoy it for a while

there is explicitly an easter egg referencing this

what are you talking about, japanese VA barrett is chewing scenery nonstop. Dude is constantly at 100% campy pro wrestler energy in japanese.

what supersampling etc. settings are yall using with the original on retroarch, i’ve been getting some weird glitches with the text boxes that are irritating even if the rest of it looks great

was going to say fuck it and dig out my ps2 but remembered my ps1 memory card has disappeared

I still haven’t listened to the Japanese Barret but I refuse to believe he isn’t channeling the spirit of Masahiro Chono cuz any other approach would be very silly, and bad

Even his entrance music was worthy of a Final Fantasy battle theme

That entrance theme has some words you shouldn’t listen to unless you’re wearing headphones, maybe.

50% chance I use these quarantine times to play through every Final Fantasy and take note of every single pro-wrestling reference.

in the japanese version, Cloud talks like The Fastidious Smart Kid in Class from a shonen anime who is pretending to be tough, and Barret sounds almost like he’s trying to channel Takagi Wataru at times

Also Jessie is way flirtier

idk I had to switch back midway through the intro because I just could not deal with his performance it was so flat

make sure retroarch and the beetle hw core are up to date. I had a handful of weird visual glitches when I played through last year but I’m doing another run now and pretty much everything looks perfect

i was getting shit with a red line when characters took damage and sometimes my limit meters were misaligned and i did find out how to fix that, i’ll go figure out what it was if that’s anything like what you’re getting
