Fatigued Souls (Part 1)

good take

Just beat Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen for the first time ever. Feeling like chalice dungeons were a very underappreciated part of Bloodborne, but also I can’t imagine delving into them as anything but an ARC build.

Item load is actually good and it’s kind of sad that Dark gave up on the concept.

Playing Dark Souls 1 again and it’s like… wow it’s very clearly not as good as Demons. I really wanna see the Mega Man style ā€œchoose your levelā€ approach to the next Souls like game. I know Dark kinda sorta does this, but it’s also just not enough, and it’s too focused on beefing up your character. Demons character progression is still there, but the softlocks are so much harder (e.g. pierce/magic in 2, blunt in 4, poison res/healing in 5, not being utterly terrified in 3) that it makes it less impactful.

TBF, there’s not much in Demons that compares to something like climbing out of Blighttown and then climbing up Sen’s and then finding the shining golden city, but then… well yeah we all know what happens here. The sense of empowerment in beating all the x-2 levels in Demons feels so empowering whereas DaS’s backhalf is like a weird and long victory march.

Still haven’t finished the video but somebody first modded a bunch of Halo maps into Dark Souls 1, then used them to replace the ones in the matchmaking PvP arena that nobody ever used, then modded the game to remove a bunch of restrictions around those to make them easier to play, then added Quake style powerups to those maps, them additional modes like a functional CTF mode, then rebalanced the combat for PvP by seemingly adding a bunch of Dark Souls 2 stuff like non-instant backstabs, then changed a bunch of the weapons and also removed what seems to be every summoning restriction. Like I said, I’m not even through it all yet

I am playing Demon’s Souls on PS3 and I am loving every moment of it.

I want to play more of it before I express some deeper comments… but in the meanwhile, I would like to ask a queston: I have killed the Dragon God, and I can spend trade his souls for Firestorm.

I read on internet that magic builds are overpowered and the ā€œeasy modeā€ of DeS, so I decided to go for a primarliy melee character to better enjoy the game. I did get the soul ray, which I admit is very useful.

Now, the question is: considering I am at level 40 and have quite low intelligence and magic, does it still make sense to get Firestorm for boss battles? I would have to level up magic and int to the minimum necessariy requirements, but it will never become powerful to be OP. Still useful, or should I just consume those souls?

i would save all of the boss souls incase you want to use them for something later: you can always farm souls to level up and buy stuff, you can’t refight the bosses without starting ng+

40 is still kinda early, it’s entirely possible you’d be in a position to nuke bosses with firestorm by the late game if that’s something you want to do. if you don’t want to trivialise the game but want some helpful magic to diversify your playthrough, there are other spells you’d want first

I think I am close to finishing the game as I only have to take down bosses of 1-5 and 3-5. The game is lovely, although also quite shorter than Dark Souls or Bloodborne.
Does it make sense to play NG+ (some random people would say ā€œthe true demon’s souls starts hereā€ā€¦) or is it just more of the same?

It would be exactly the same but you could influence world tendency to see the Pure Whife/Pure Black content.

Speaking of which, I still don’t understand it. I think I am still pure white, but is there a sure way to check it? Is there a good/concise explanation around?

Little icon in the top left corner. The first print of the USA version came with this mini guide that explained everything. Maybe see if that guide has a scan somewhere?

Thanks, if you can!

Anyway, the game is really a jewel, and very tight. The third area, Storm, is so sublime. It makes me think of shores in Scotland.

OK, I got grey tendency, maybe because I died a lot. Pity, I wanted to encounter Miralda

Are the items I have deposited at the Nexus guy, going to carry over to NG+?

iirc everything carries over except keys and NPC state (so make sure to trade those boss souls for items/spells/etc or you’ll have to wait until you unlock their NPCs again)

also don’t go into NG+ with a big stockpile of souls, you won’t be able to spend them on stats until you clear 1-1 again

So, finished the game! I took some time to get pure black character tendency and kill some black phantoms to get some special items. I am an 80 level guy with strength as primary skill, and a crushing Knight sword +5. I made myself also a northern regalia before entering NG+ and used it against some black phantom, so I enjoyed using it.
After starting NG+, despite what i read on internet, i saw that the game was actually easier than the beginning of NG, as I was one-shotting pretty much all normal enemies, so I decided that I played enough Demon’s Souls.

Is it better than Dark Souls? I guess it’s very difficult to answer. Demon is tighter and more focused, I think it’s more ā€œperfectā€, somehow more ā€œjapaneseā€ and more poetic (especially in its ending cutscenes, while Dark souls and Bloodborne have less beautiful endings imo). It’s a smaller game, leaving me wanting to play a few more new places. It manages to be much less grindy than Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
Dark Souls is more expansive and has a larger number of unforgettable places (darkroot, sen fortress, the catacombs, to name a few), but also has some less inspired and hollow places. The same goes for Bloodborne.
One thing I noticed with Demon is that the bosses are easier and more playable than Dark Souls and Bloodborne. It’s true that sometimes a checkpoint is very far from the boss, but in almost all cases, the boss can be fought and beaten at first or second attempt.
This makes Demon the easiest of the three, for me.

Among the three games, perhaps Bloodborne has the best bosses… and probably the hardest.

In the end… difficult to rank these three games, I am happy to have played all of them. Surely one defect of Dark Souls and Bloodborne was the necessity of grinding, and the fact that Demon has much less of it, is a big plus.

Yeah, Demon’s has these interesting moments like when I reach the boss room in 5-2 after slogging through the swamp for 20 minutes, I’m sweating bullets because of the consequence of failure there. I don’t even remember exactly what that boss does because it goes down so quickly (especially if you do Valley of Defilement last) and I always beat it on the first try in my 3 playthroughs of Demon’s, and then it’s a huge relief.

Yeah, I was precisely thinking about that one, after sweating my way through the mud of valley of defilement.
I had a similar situation with the Tower Knight, where the checkpoint was super far, and I did not want to try my luck again under the dragon’s fire, and I unloaded over 100 arrows to the Tower Knight to not get killed in a melee fight.

It’s also great that they did not put a ring to walk quickly in the mud, like they did instead in Dark Souls’ Blight Town or PS5 Demon’s Souls: introducing something like that completely defeats the initial purpose of the swamp.
