I went Metal Slug because I never got good at Crazy Taxi and am sad about it. Metal Slug sprites are excellent.

I can say I voted Yakuza 0 and Crazy Taxi because my heart never wavers in all things Sega, though I am shit at Crazy Taxi. Y0 is probably the best entry point to Yakuza for newcomers though I’m sad no one loves 5 as much as I do in all its bloated monstrousness.

when i get to 5, i will probably love 5. i still havent finished 4 or 5, though, so it will be a while.
If 5 was just Kiryu, Saejima, and Haruka, it’d be a contender for series favourite for me.

Saejima’s part really is a drag but I appreciate the ridiculous long-winded dream sequence and ambiance of the prison snow-hellscape just for trying to illustrate total hopelessness.

Yeah, the hunting was simple but really satisfying to me and while there’s no other connection really besides snow-setting survivalism and Sega, made me think of D2’s abandoned huts and portable deer meat grilling in the snow.

I’ll be lying if I say I have a particularly deep appreciation for SFII, but I know enough to know it owns, and if I ever put in the effort I would probably find endless riches. Minecraft is… well, other people have said it better than me. I find it an ugly game, spiritually. No I don’t know what I mean by that. SSF2T
i feel weird voting for this one because i haven’t played metal slug 6, but i HAVE played other metal slug games, and crazy taxi, and crazy taxi irks me deeply in ways i don’t understand. it’s an all-timer of a game concept but it just isn’t… there. maybe the city’s design is bad? i’ve never enjoyed playing it enough to try and find out why i don’t like it, but metal slug owns. metal slug 6

super metroid is another case of “almost-there.” i adore the metroid series overall, but super’s whittled-down frictionlessness flows over me like a cool breeze and i feel nothing. as an artifact it’s a marvel, and i’ll watch it at GDQ every time, but as a narrative-aesthetic-conceptual experience it’s too removed. i can appreciate craft over feeling or verve, but the craft needs to be a bit better. yakuza 0!
NiGHTS is beautiful, holistic, and singular. Sonic 2 is a mid-tier Sonic game. NiGHTS wins.

i spent all week on the “ikaruga isn’t the right shmup blah blah” train but thanks to the lovely discussion i’ve decided to vote for Ikaruga. ff14 owns. i love it. ikaruga isn’t my favorite shmup. its meticulous design is suffocating. but if it’s an overdetermined machine it’s a machine of great power and beauty, and its overdeterminism feeds into its themes of duty and inevitability. sorry gays!
