Everything Ron Gilbert has made post-humongous was mixed at best, so I don’t know how to react to this yet. I’m more hyped by the possible crossover that was hinted at in Sea of Thieves’ PotC expansion, truth to be told.

i hope this one hits for me, i liked so much about in other waters except the storytelling fell a bit flat. i think the more rpg-y nature of this one will work a lot better with this type of interface first game design.

a Tharsis sequel is the last thing I’d have expected in 2022

I think I only ended up liking the UI and the practical, data-minded writing in In Other Waters. Focusing more on character relationships is really leaning into this writer’s weaknesses. Hopefully they’ve figured out how to be less thudding.

I hope this is a little less miserably dependent on lucky dice rolls though

Gilbert has stated his preference to the “Lucasfilm Games” name in the past. I believe he still worked there when they changed to Lucasarts, but his personal collection of boxed games just covers Lucasfilm Games.

Based on Thimbleweed I expect this game to have 2 really good puzzles, 2 really good jokes, 2-3x as many jokes that don’t land and that they focus on for an embarrassing amount of time, and an ending that sours the entire experience.

Based on what Ron and Dave worked on in the Thimbleweed Park Dolores mini-adventure I expect the game to, like MI1 and 2, fluctuate between characters being themselves, and being actors playing the character. Ron Gilbert saying Curse is canon (which he has said on twitter) is something I expect should be taken in the classical meaning of the word, rather than the modern meaning of fictional events really happening.

No they didn’t, Gilbert’s tweeted about that. People are just making tons of assumptions based on Gilbert’s old blog post (same one that said he’d only make another one if he owned the IP, which is obviously something he changed his mind about) and the fact the announcement emphasises MI1 and 2. But that doesn’t actually mean the others will be ignored, which is obvious since Murray, a MI3 creation, is right there.

Plus if it’s been two years in the works as Gilbert says, it means it was probably part of the same general movement as the Sea of Thieves thing I mentioned before, and that one takes place between MI3 and 4.
