Amazing that they translated it as “Heartthrob Memorial.” Not a bad translation, but weird to see it after decades of hearing it referred to otherwise.
Yeah, I think this is the first time this is in English which is really exciting! I’m gonna finally play it! (I’ve started it in Japanese a few times, but I never have had the energy to keep up with it.)
Kotaku ran an absolutely batshit meandering article about this translation project last month and how it is a disappointment! It’s real weird and I don’t know how it was published!
As a kid in middle school, I didn’t so much hate her but her character thesis was to get in the way of the robots fighting which was against why I was watching in the first place. I want to see my action figures do the cool stuff.
i tried to watch wing a few years ago and fell off it because i found it pretty boring and 3 edgy 6 its own good, but the first ED featuring Relena is phenomenal ok
just taking a wild guess here that Kotaku in its current state has got to be somehow even more of a shtishow than it ever has been, tbh, based on all the things that have happened in that office
I was in the gawker offices exactly once for work in 2012 when trying to sell them some software and I turn my mind’s eye around that one every now and then
yeah i’m not trying to slag on the staff per se but i know at least half a dozen friends of mine who worked at Gawker in some capacity did not come out of it the better (like mental health wise; it definitely provided career opportunity, though). the round of firings that happened a while back basically made the whole office a skeleton crew and they have been trying to right the ship since, but like…
man there is just too much to even go into lol. just imagine the most-toxic workspace you’ve experienced, i guess.
oh yeah. its just kind of crazy what that group of sites staffs have been through since the gawker days. like its all so mundane but also extremely distressing. and they are somehow still around.
i interviewed there once to do events for them but like we all unconsciously agreed that me going from running a DIY space to handling multiple millions of dollars in budget was maybe too much of a leap
I want to say it was kirk hamilton or one of them who actually tried to articulate recently how talented and now ubiquitous that whole generation of media folks who came through gawker was, but it did not seem like a good place to work, no
I appreciate being in their general orbit more than most … cohorts of wayward media professionals(?) … because they’re among like very very few groups of people who have (publicly) kept their senses of humor and their heads high over the past decade’s political realignments, but at the same time I think I have been lucky to have had like, a recreational interest at best
my feelings on journalists vary on a daily basis but i usually liked people i met from those offices if only because “at least they don’t fucking work for Vice”
the production of Wing is so hilariously slipshod and by the seat of its pants that a. this is the only ending and b. both openings didn’t have final, finished animation for several episodes, to the point where the second op that plays for the last 10-odd episodes wasn’t fully finished until 2-3 eps out of the show ending
if you watch Wing on Crunchyroll, it’s very obvious whoever was doing QC lost their shit because randomly one of the episodes in the back half has “Just Love” in 72 pt. size during the ED
we asked translator TokimekiFan001 for his opinion on the TokimekiFan002 translation project and his response was to scowl with displeasure, turn bright red, and perform a devastating series of stomp attacks around the ring of the boss arena. outside the TokimekiMen climb into their spiked junkyard battle chariots and begin raucously chanting their favourite love confessions from the highly anticipated TF001 translation, as they rile themselves up for the carnage to come. THIS is earth - 2050! ruled by filthy men, each with his own vision of Tokimeki Memorial! each man fighting and dying to be appointed localisation vizier for the official Tokimeki Memorial re-release, the last IP capable of stimulating earth’s ravaged economy! outside the fields are grey and barren, victims of the James Cameron’s Gunsmith Cats wars of 2029. there is no longer an alternative! YOU must pick a side, and fight - or PERISH, in the tokimeki fields!
that is somewhat unironically me but instead of being a warring Tokimemo translator, I’m ignoring Tokimemo for the 8+ years in the making Amagami fan-translation
