i was indifferent toward SK but happy to see a links awakening-like

It looks like there’s a lot of action moment-to-moment, it doesn’t fall into the pattern of most Link’s Awakening-likes (mostly slower-paced games that focus on the puzzle/exploration side of the formula).

It reminds me that basically what holds Shovel Knight together is that it’s a very active and dynamic game. The high-contrast aesthetic serves the gameplay rather than being something to linger over the beauty of. That goes some way to explain why Shovel Knight is beloved by Gamers and divisive on SB

Yeah, I’ve never been super into Shovel Knight, but I’m very interested in this, even beyond my ongoing fascination with Link’s Awakening. The combat and movement look appealing and dynamic.

how in the world is shovel knight nearly 8 years old already?

so i kinda don’t want to use retroarch now?
are there any alternatives?
i kinda tried to use it in the past and found it very confusing anyway
i always need help when i set up emulators

mednafen does a lot of the same stuff well but it’s commandline and maybe even more obtuse than retroarch if you’re not into that

there may be some good frontends im not aware of though

if mednafen supports high quality crt shaders that’s like 90% of the reason I use retroarch

Yeah I never really understood why people messed with this when stand alone emulators were already so handy.

you can never quarantine the past

also the one really nice thing about retroarch is that it standardizes input management. I’ve added so many emulators to it and never have to fiddle with input wizards and configuring plugins, etc.

the initial setup of retroarch is a pain but I still find it a more pleasant user experience than shit like epsxe. once you get it going it’s pretty plug and play.

There is a front end I use called MedGuiR that is probably just as bizarre and obtuse as retroarch but in a cute/funny way. I only use mednafen for ps1 and virtual boy though

ignoring all of the arguable qol/ux benefits/detriments, these days retroarch cores are almost always superior to the standalone emulators they are based upon, because of its superior input/output handling. perfect audio/video sync, reduced base latency, run-ahead. also: shaders, native-res crt output stuff, chd support.

the one unquestionably good thing that retroarch has done is be really portable – I have a way higher degree of trust in non-desktop, non-x86 implementations of various suites of emulators now that retroarch has basically swallowed the competition whole. this applies to I/O handling most of all. I never liked using retroarch on a desktop machine compared with standalone emulators (either CLI or non-CLI), and I absolutely have had worse experiences running some retroarch cores than I have running standalone emulators at various points in time, but its approach to every other context won me over.

also, I don’t think there’s a single other person on the planet whose experience of using emulators and expectations of how well they should work in various contexts that I trust, because I started doing this when I was 10 and it’s easy for me and basically 80% of it is misunderstood at any given time. I was working on this documentation with some academics in order to hopefully address that but then I got a better job.

I agree that its approach to a lot of other abstractions is very questionable, and I wouldn’t expect the mame people to agree with retroarch’s choices, because they have also had to make a lot of opinionated and idiosyncratic choices about various abstractions over the years and there’s no way they would have wound up in the same place.

it is also not surprising to me at all that a lot the principals would be loathed by one another and probably all around unpleasant people in many respects because hobbyist projects like this tend to create miserable little fiefdoms no matter how good their work is.
