yeah, as iconic and engaging as Ranni’s quest is, it seems like the exception to the rule
I would like some conclusion to Nepheli Loux especially how blatant it is that she is Godfrey’s daughter but I guess its a plot thread they totally forgot about while they were busy copy-pasting crystalians, cat gargoyles, crucible knights, and ulcerated tree spirits dozens of times.
“in this ash, i can smell the ancient storm” forever and ever and ever and ever
the rich guy from the roundtable who goes to Volcano manor also seems similarly unfinished/bugged/unsolved
maybe we’ll get some sweet Moral Choice DLC where Kenneth has to choose between the two
re diallos i wondered if performing the gesture you get from his brother in front of him would progress things further when he’s despairing in the manor but unfortunately i didn’t think of it and missed my shot
I wish this game changed the way armor worked. I mean it did, in the fact that armor is now worthless since you die when you get hit regardless, but that serves to highlight a problem these games have almost always had: I don’t need fifteen different dresses/coats/breastplates where the only differences are are 9.8 strike defense rating vs a 9.7 slash defense rating or whatever. for one, the X.X granularity is too much, it’s meaningless, but it’s especially meaningless when the game is crammed full of items all around the same ratings. at least a bunch of the helms offer real stat changes or some little bonus to putting them on.
I’m almost 60 hours into this and still have no idea who and what a lot of you are talking about
Is there any point to the “piss off” guy at the shack in Liurnia, or is he just there trying to BBQ his prawns in peace?
He’s involved in a couple quests
oooooh cut-content excacation vids are already starting to come out for Elden Ring. this one’s not super interesting, but the channel is really one of the best to follow for this sort of thing.
Did anyone get much use out of the crafting system? The only things I bothered to craft the whole game were scarlet rot related (cures & poison arrows)
perfumes are worth crafting, but other than that I haven’t touched it
Throwables are worth it too, at various stages of the game. I assume ammo is worth it if you’re using a launcher regularly.
I only made cotton.
It sounds like the sleep arrows are also useful on multi-unit bosses. Nothing else really stands out. The buff items are weirdly underpowered compared to incantations and physick.
I followed the whole thread (while having a break from Souls).
So… It seems this game was underwhelming?
This game whelms in all sorts of ways.
The first like 20 hours of this game was maybe more exhilarating than any game since Dark Souls for me. The mid game, where I experienced most of the repeat assets and frustration, lasted for a out 20 more hours and was a gradual dip in my interest. The proceeding 15 or so in the actual mid game of the critical path was just excellent. But these past 10 or so as I approach the end game have me thinking this is the one Souls game that I don’t feel very urgent about completing. This by far has the least interesting lore.
But that early bit was truly so good. I wouldn’t call this underwhelming exactly. Maybe parts of it are, but it is also a huuuuuuuuge game.
Yeah, it’s more that it overwhelms. The game has levels and creature designs as good as any From ever made, and in impossibility vast quantities. The reason we start to complain is this feeling of an all-you-can-eat buffet, it’s all piled up in trays at random. You look at the tasty food you haven’t tried yet but you’re already overstuffed
There’s really cool things everywhere in Elden Ring like a tower that you can press a switch to turn upside down, that I somehow wound up treating as routine and half-forgetting not long after. There’s like two Dark Souls’s worth of inspired ideas in here but they’re not given the space to shine.
So overall where would I rank it compared to other From games? I honestly have no idea.
hours 1-5: “great this is gonna be another bloodborne”
hours 6-20: “holy shit this is the best from game ever better than dark soul i’m jumping and hooting and hollering yeah this is great”
hours 21-30: "heh, yeah cool
"
hours 31-35: “I found a few grace points and made a couple levels. beat a few midbosses. good stuff, i’ll check back in later this week”
hours 36-40: “I am so fucking depressed and my hands hurt and when I boot the game I just immediately want to turn off the PS4.”
some day soon, maybe this month, i’ll finish it
i’m glad people have gotten to finish this and enjoy most of what it has to offer but i’m in the “overwhelmed” camp, I can finish any of the souls games in the amount of time i’ve put into this one. i’m a massive fan of RPGs and yet highly susceptible to burnout after a rigid dropoff point. it’s why i’ve come close to beating so many games but stopped either exactly halfway or exactly at the final boss(es) (lol sorry SMTV, chrono trigger, wizardry, dragon quest 8, etc etc)
I was feeling pretty underwhelmed around the 20-30 hour mark, by which point I had pretty much played alone.
Then I started messing with the multiplayer component. Due to the games popularity right now, that has really redeemed it for me. Those bullshit filler dungeons are a fun romp with two friends and the occasional invader.
