Elden Ring (Part 1)

Btw at this point I’ve just stopped doing trash dungeons unless they seem cool. I don’t need most of the items from them and I’m doing pretty well in taking down bosses so I’m operating on a strict “do I feel like doing this” mode now

yeah I had the same experience, after I hit 45 hours I’ve been playing for like 2 or 3 per week

no complaints though, they did a great job, they just made a game that seems about 40% longer than I’m up for

My bottomline review is “Elden Ring is too much cake (**1/2)”

Going super-slow has been pretty rewarding so far, not trying to throw any judgement on “how it should be played” mind you, just that the realities of my having-job, wife-having-job, two-kids-around playstyle means that this feels like a huge library that I can just slowly meander through at my own pace, drifting to another volume if it takes my fancy, and it’s gonna be there for a while.

there should be some sort of penalty for writing bad messages

like actually though, it seems like it fits within the game design so well

you actually get rewarded for bad messages – any interaction on your message gives you a heal lol.

i turned off online until i got sufficiently far in the game because the message spam was too much for me.

killed the poop boy in his cell, with no regrets, you’ll go no further foul monster

Same. There are still like sunny days and and ecosystems. Seems like he doesn’t want that.

Killed again. But you have unlimited continues, and get to continue from exactly the same place as you were when you died. This makes the game kind of easy.

The “too much cake” feeling has not been helped by, following the completely sick high fantasy city, three back-to-back areas that are basically just snow and enemies I’ve seen before with health buffs

Could be worse too. Could be Demon’s Souls weapon upgrade system, which is so bad it drove me into the arms of the famous dupe glitch.

I’m working my way through Mt. Gelmir Hero’s Grave and the trap puzzle in there is so evil and funny that I can’t help but love it.

So there’s a ton of lava in the dungeon, which makes you move slow, and chariots that kill you instantly. I thought this was a repeat of Blighttown and that I was supposed to find a ring to move quickly through the lava. NO. YOU RIDE THE CHARIOT TRAPS BY DROPPING ONTO THEM.

I love how so many levels in this game feel like a gimmick D&D trap dungeon you’d play one night with your friends.

they got the weapon upgrading mostly right in dark souls 3. you got so many upgrade stones in that game that you could kind of have whatever weapons you wanted. way late in elden ring you can buy everything, so you still technically can have whatever you want, but it’s very unevenly balanced toward the back end, most of the game you’re completely strapped or bottlenecked. and even at the end it’s so expensive to fully or near fully upgrade a new weapon if you feel like going that route that you’re basically locked into finding whatever cheese farm is en vouge, you’re not going to organically come up with that many runes. I think I saw that buying a normal weapon up to 25 takes like 500k runes total. that’s a lot!

also seems way, way easier to get a somber weapon to +10 than it is to hit +25 on a regular

Did Radahn… Gotta admit that it was my favourite boss so far. Yes… It has many design problems and flaws but sometimes you have to throw all those to a wall to make aa point. And throwing rules out can only become a point if it is not the rule through out the game.

Anyway it took me a few tries but…
I glytched the boss.

Not kidding, he was unable to attack me as long as I kept riding my horse behind him. He kept turning left and right trying to get me into the attacking zone, but I was following him full lock on and he was stuck searching for me. So basically he was riding forward with very times left and right turns, while I kept riding following his ass and giving an ocasional poke… It was about 2 minutes of that. He didn’t even did the meteor attack transformation.

So yeah I ended up killing him without status effect (well my horse go to weapon does bleed… Helped quite a bit) and no summons.

The arrows early part… Is basically irrelevant in gameplay. By my second try I was already not getting hit one. Run for purple missiles and dodge into then, the timing was really simple. For the other arrow attacks just get the horse and lock on the boss. Move diagonally while boosting the horse.

I might have been able to defeat him without glytching him. Took his HP quite low a few times, and I was starting to be able to do his 1st phase (2nd? Does arrow phase count as 1st?) without getting hit. But I never had enough time with his last phase to git the gud in.

Oh well… I was not gonna pass the opportunity of killing him while glytched =P.
No mercy for demigods.

Re: Weapon Upgrading

I think the system could be made better, but I feel like they want maxed standard weapons to be more rare than maxed ‘unique’ weapons. You can tell they want them to be hard to compare because of different upgrade tools, but also different maximum max upgrades. That they made it easier to upgrade unique weapons is probably intentional because they want people to try those weapons out — I know I hardly ever tried twinkling titanite until way, way later in Dark Souls.
