Elden Ring (Part 1)

Curious how the crucified scream only at night.

I’ve had one use case, which was being stuck at a cave save point which had no way out, a boss too strong for me and no one answering my summons.

haha whelp made it to the plateau way before I should have and it is hilarious how much I get destoryed up there. This rules. Should probably like…go do a bunch of other stuff like the whole red region first though.

the game is good now

I just got to the Fire Giant and I’m looking forward to FromSoft covering my therapy bill!!!

My biggest gripe with the game so far: I don’t like that there are the teleportation portal things.

I finally figured out how to get into the Academy while probing my inventory for help against Radahn.

Twenty plus hours in and I’m still getting tutorial popups for opening menu tabs for the first time.

Feeling a little better about it: managed to get unstuck and take down both Rennala and Loretta. The Rennala fight is incredibly cool but hard enough to overstay its welcome a bit—I wish they’d just let you skip the first phase after you’ve done it once. Loretta immediately nuked my skeleton infantry and seems to be totally immune to my bleed dagger strats so it was a very classic FromSoft dodge roll and stab battle, but pretty well balanced and fun!

totally unfair how ghosts and golems don’t bleed. there’s gotta be some kind of fluid in there

I like the teleportation traps, but I’m mad that all you have to do is go to your map screen and warp back to where you came from. I love when a game like this sends you to a terrifying new area you’re not ready for and then forces you to crawl your way back home through the wilderness. Hollow Knight had a fantastic moment like this. Elden Ring came SO close!

ride the water wheel in the magic academy all the way down for a fun surprise

I think you have to walk or ride to a Site of Grace first. Fast travel’s blocked after a trap, unless maybe it isn’t after you die or something.

Speaking of traps?

Ah, ok. Yeah, I hit a teleportation trap that took me to an area where I really couldn’t do much except face a giant golem who was too strong for me. I didn’t try warping out until after he killed me, so I guess when you die you’re then allowed to warp.

Speaking of teleportation portals I’m at The Four Belfries and have this imbued sword. Any recommendations on which gate to use it on or should I save it for later?

they’re actually all kind of a goof if it helps

the highest one leads back to the first area of the game which has some important items for certain things you may or may not be doing

Having a good time with this so far.

Certain bosses still feel like too much of a dodge-fest in the vein of DS3. Having to roll out the way of 5-6 attacks before I can safely land one poke with my Estoc feels gratuitous.

Last night I made it into Stormveil castle and it seems like they just glued the geometry from Boletaria and the High Wall of Lothric together? I also found myself tuning out here because it’s not really as good as either of those two. The density is way off.

The one looping piece of ambient music in Limgrave sounds identical to the intro of Great Southern Land by Icehouse so i’ve been riding around on my goat singing ā€œYou walk alone, like a primitive manā€ whilst my partner looks on disapprovingly.
