yeah I saw a video about that… and I never realized this, but it pointed out that the headless in sekiro actually reach into your butthole with their grab attack, which seems like a much clearer reference to that myth… so it’s not much of a reach to suggest the same with dung eater. all of his victims have telltale bloodstains in their laps, so I mean

Maybe it’s admirable in a way that ✿•.¸¸.•* The Loathsome Dung-Eater *•.¸¸.•✿ sees potential for the world to become even worse than it is. It would be interesting if the game explored that, through the story of this or another character.

I’m thinking of something like when you go through the school in Silent Hill. It’s already oppressive enough, and then it turns into the alternate version. Or the future world in Ocarina of Time. That sort of thing, ideally with not just one but several transitions. Each time getting more inhospitable.

When I watched the movie Brawl in Cell Block 99, as comically unpleasant as the “final” prison is, I couldn’t help wishing the movie had continued along that path into full-blown surrealism.

Edit: I guess Elden Ring already kind of does this geographically, when you get to places such as Caelid, as opposed to alternate versions of the same location.

despite the existence of a major iceberg sequence in elden ring i feel like it lacked an escalating thematic continuity (which could’ve been horror, or anything really) that kept me intrigued and educatedly-guessing about what i’d find next. instead each component area sort of felt pre-packaged, as though it could exist in a vacuum independent of the others

something very funny about just hopping a fence to get to caelid though, i won’t knock that

Great point. It’s hard for Elden Ring to globally escalate when you can visit most of the game in any order. But it’s pretty good at internally escalating each legacy dungeon until the area theme reaches peak weirdness in the shardbearer. The structure is reminiscent of Mega Man, come to think of it.

But I do agree there was a big missed opportunity to escalate in at least the subset of areas gated after the capital. Every boss in the endgame rush from Fire Giant on was blander than most of the shardbearers. I was hoping the endgame would be weirder than all of them combined, like Bloodborne managed to pull off (or for that matter, Mega Man 2’s Dr. Wily stages!)

Never played a Souls before but I have played a few other Fromsoftware games and what characterizes them to me is a singular focus on some unique gameplay novelty they’ve come up with. And it’s interesting to get to the end portion of Elden Ring and see how far they’ve pushed their central gameplay novelty, in this case rolling and stamina, and crept the design to a point where you get a boss like Malenia who has a move that can’t really be dodged and stresses the central mechanic to its absolute limit.

I’m just imagining another one of From’s niche series becoming suddenly popular. Like the card battle mechanic in Lost Kingdoms. By the time the 7th sequel comes out you have to get perfect i-frames when you summon a monster from a card otherwise a hidden boss kills you in one shot.

I do like the game. Some of the differences in this series compared to most RPGs are very exciting to me. Like the flask system is a concept I really enjoy. So it feels very deflating to see that other items in the game utilize this same hoard and forget resource system that plagues every other RPG ever made.

Could every collectable work like flasks? You use items you find to upgrade your item containers then have them auto refill at a grace. Instead of farming bones and feathers to make more arrows you could use bones and feathers to upgrade a quiver which then permanently refills +1 arrow at every grace.

Everything could work more like golden seeds and sacred tears, which were also some of the only items I actually cared about finding. If I could make a criticism of the game it’s that maybe 1% of the time I actually cared about whatever item I found.

After beating the game, I generally don’t like cinematics in games and would prefer NPCs just leave me alone but a little something more than 30 seconds of cutscene after 100 hours of very difficult play would’ve been nice. I can’t take a breath between enemy combos and I can’t stop to breath between finishing one game and starting a NG+

Steam deleted my savegame just as I was finishing with the Capital. I was feeling pretty tired of the whole thing at that point, but I restarted anyway. Now I’m having much more fun for some reason. The second run-through of a souls game is always more fun than the first, for me, because the muscle memory is tuned already and you don’t have to spend a lot of time looking for shit, which is my least favorite thing about any of these games (or games in general).

I still feel that the Dark Souls games are better for not being open world. I still feel that Elden Ring would be better as a long hallway of absolutely meticulously designed encounters rather than a bunch of stuff spread out in space, but now that I don’t have to explore as much, the game is more fun.
