Elden Ring 2

This works for me because Elden Ring works as Souls: Symphony of the Night.

I’m just loving to be playing this role of ā€œlittle devil on the shoulderā€ right now =P.
@toups, by not doing a respec does that mean that you are not interested in collecting all the gestures?
(Fake shame part)
What kind of souls player are you? Getting all the gestures is the most important lore investigation part of these games. You have to do it. Otherwise how will you communicate with the NPCs?

(this just came cause I only noticed yesterday you got a gesture on your first respec).

[edit]

Can I ask you to expand on that?
Items? Maps? God-like character?

Maximalism as a core value. Just lots of everything. Favoring the big experience over the constant tightly designed space (though is has those too, just not everywhere).

This was a half formed thought when I typed it originally, but I’m sticking to it.

the enemy and level design recycling gives this title a environmental coherence i don’t especially resent but it does make this feel like the driest souls game yet

Wait, so I should be spending smithing stones on my shield!? I thought that just gave it an attack bonus.

they get a tiny increase to guard boost every few levels but it’s incredibly expensive in terms of materials if you aren’t already using a greatshield

That’s wild! I’m still in the looking for a 6th level 2 smithing stone stage and have been for a while, so getting a shield to +3 ain’t happening soon.

Upgrading a shield also seems to improve the Carian Retaliation and Golden Retaliation skills.

i think all (damage dealing?) skills scale with weapon upgrades.

the guard boost increase is totally worth it when you can get it without using rare stones imo. shouldn’t be the priority but don’t neglect it either

it took me a long time to realize this but guard boost is literally the same thing as stability in past games. it reduces stamina consumption and hitstun time. the stamina reduction in particular really adds up and can be the difference between life and death in many fights.

thank you +25 brass shield, your ceaseless dedication to jobsite safety did not go unnoticed

honestly if I was interested in trying to collect all the gestures I’d just re-spec to my exact same past status.

it’s not just the principle of the thing… having to start over with my build from scratch stresses me out. I feel too committed to the choices I’ve made. I’d start to lose my sense of identity if I had to undo all of it

also @boojiboy7 I could not agree more with the sotn comparison. I love this game for the exact same reason I love that game. it’s just packed with so much lovingly crafted stuff. there’s this exuberance to all of it – it’s not big for the sake of being big, it feels big because they couldn’t help themselves.

Sunday morning summons are different than weekday late night summons. Two different people got me just to hang out and wander the map with today. I felt bad that I killed that fast invisible dung beetle on the beach by the start for one of them. I should have left that for them to figure out.

at very least, no one needs to be iterating Zelda 1 ever again after this vidcon

I’ll get back to my gamemaker project eventually!

Taylor Swift hath become Lord of the Frenzied Flame. That ending with Melina showing up to tell me she is going to murder me somehow was pretty great.

I was way overlevelled by the end because I couldn’t specialize much aside from dumping too much into Arcane. It was great.

Malenia was definitely a fight that was more fun with a co-op partner. On my own it was just proving to be a too frustrating.

Now I am in the Mohgwyn ruins and I think at 130 hours in I am now starting to get the ā€˜over-ate at the buffet’ feeling everyone else was talking about

Guess who finally tried Margit solo again for the first time since that first weekend and had zero trouble taking him out?

I must have fought that dude as a summons a couple dozen times (I’ve maxed out my on hand Rune Arcs from all the people I’ve helped), so he better have been easy.

I did a million things in the meantime, and I was getting the sense the rest of the obvious paths ahead of me were clearly out of my league for the time being. Except maybe that giant rolling pin trap thing near the start—I just got sick of dying on that hopefully final stretch (although how long did it take me to clear the bridge in 1-2 of Demon’s Souls way back when?). I probably just have to mess around with that cotton shoe thing and drop near the start or something…

Finished my run through the game on Saturday morning. Feeling really good about my overall experience and ready to begin journey 2… after spending this week helping some friends clear bosses!! On Sunday night I helped a friend knock out like 8 guys. Co op play in this game is really satisfying partially because a lot of bosses are REALLY vulnerable to, like, basic coordination, haha. Kicking the ass of something from Limgrave with my whole power set but brutally carved-down HP is a ton of fun. I also like whipping out bizarre and grotesque weapons that my friends have not seen yet!

Probably gonna begin another game on the weekend. Will charge through to complete some stories I missed. No plan to complete a whole second run though.
