As @dedede69 mentioned, bleed is a really good way to go. Get 2 katanas that can take ashes of war, put bleed on both, and upgrade them to a decent level like… +7 or +9 if you already have all the bells at the maidens (doesn’t need to be +25, but the more you upgrade the more bleed they cause, somber stone weapons usually do less bleed than normal weapons with AoW).

Dual wielding bleed weapons does much more bleed status, and with your mimic doing the same… Basically I was just dodging the most obvious attacks, and praying she would aim her tornado of slashing death in my general direction.

Keep her pinned down, and you will over-damage her healing factor.

She also only does physical damage apart from the second phase rot attacks, so you might feel a big difference by using the tree sentinel armor and the best physical damage negation talisman. Makes the fight more… Manageable.

Never tried doing bleed magic while incantations while fighting her, but I imagine that calling your mimic with dual bleed swords, while you keep your distance casting incantations should also work.

Use the talismans for getter stamina regen and increased flask healing. It’s a long fight and those resources sometimes fail at the worst times.

[edit]
You still have primarily a dex build, right?
Then katanas is the way to go, you will still output decent damage beyond the bleed.

If you need runes to upgrade and buy stones go do some blood crow farming. There’s a good video around the thread, but in case you don’t find it google something like 5million runes in 1 hour or best elden ring rune farming. If it shows Mogh’s stage and a big crow in the distance, that’s the one

[edit2]
Arcane scale for bleed is rather minimal. Somber stone weapons don’t increase bleed with upgrades, but normal weapons with AoW do. Instead of more damage per bleed, focus on bleeding moar.

this definitely varies. sometimes even if the marker says that in my experience lol

I wanted to make a really dumb heavy weapon that was the opposite of moonveil so I have a poison rotten greataxe with bloodhound step that I have to hold with both hands that inflicts both poison and rot

just the most awful sickly thing that I can go zooting around with

I want to play NG+ with two Hoslow’s Petal Whip. No idea how I can get a second in this first playthrough, but I probably won’t go NG+ before any DLC comes out.

Co-op partners can drop items so if you want one and you’re on PC let me know and I can hook you up.

One you get at one of the volcano mansion assassinations, another finishing… It says there on the page you linked. Finish fool brother’s questline.

I have also used that rotten axe a few times, just because I like the idea of it.

I’m partial the farming the stationary gargoyles near the across the roots site of grace in deeproot. I’m sure it’s not nearly as efficient but it’s basically zero effort and nets me enough to buy more smithing stones in less than 5 minutes.

If I was grinding to level up I’d do the blood crows… but I still have PTSD from those damn giant skeleton summons in that area

I’ve been trying power stancing rivers of blood with moonveil and the blood output is disappointing… I guess I can bloody up both of my uchis instead. Since I’m dex/int, I wonder if frost would make more sense though? I have like 9 arcane… I have to wear marika’s soreseal and the silver tear mask to even be able to use rivers of blood.

I’m gonna miss transient moonlight though… It’s a really good tool to keep the fight under control and protecting the mimic tear. I guess hoarfost stomp could achieve similar results? how much did they nerf it?

also since I can’t find a straight answer on the internet anywhere: are ashes of war consumed when you use them to grant an affinity to a weapon? or is it more like equipping.

Ashes of War aren’t consumable. You can freely swap them out without worry.

Not knowing was why I’ve steered clear of both them and the Spirit Ashes for like 40 hours.

Which was probably smart in the case of the ashes of war, because I still haven’t hit the tipping point where the improved damage scaling makes up for the lower base damage.

Def use Spirit Ashes; it’s possible to play without them of course but the game really feels like it expects you to summon whenever you can. There’s lots of talk about which ones are OP but I had good luck just goofing around and using ones that jived with my character thematically. Like, the Skeleton Militiamen follow the same rules as other undead and will resurrect endlessly unless an enemy attacks them while they’re down, which happens far less often than you’d expect. The Marionettes are probably even more obnoxious as summons than they are as enemies cuz they spam projectiles non stop and will stagger enemies super fast. Or Land Squirts? Those things are super tanky and they poison enemies and in some areas they suck but in others you’ll just be able to whack a boss to death cuz it’s too busy trying to bash yr squirts.

(That’s not an official recommendation, I cannot guarantee you will succeed with Land Squirting, they’re pretty cool though.)

The Fire Monk can fucking suck my ass though, I think the summon AI can be occasionally flaky but that motherfucker just stood by the fog door half the time I summoned him, I wish he and I had never met, what a waste of grimly gloveworts or whatever the hell they’re called.

Yeah I always assumed they were consumable because you can duplicate them. I guess that’s just if you really wanna dual wield with the same skill on both weapons? but that seems redundant because you’ll only be able to use the left handed skill when power stancing anyway

as it happens, hoarfrost turned out to be extremely effective against malenia. did double cold uchi’s with hoarfrost as my active skill, and used mimic tear with the same load out. hoarfrost doesn’t damage her much but it’s extremely effective at interrupting her combos and has neglible FP cost, making it much easier to spam and save enough FP to azur comet her at the beginning of phase 2. the int scaling of cold weapons made an enormous difference in terms of damage output, especially after inflicting frostbite (which I was able to do with a single power stance combo). the damage boost from that feels more effective for turning the tides of her self-healing, but really, the key difference was how much more effectively hoarfrost protected the mimic tear, who’s assistance was even more critical in phase 2. having the mimic reach phase 2 with over 50% HP remaining made a huge difference. it was hard cheese, but still satisfying to figure out and implement. I’ll beat her ā€œthe real wayā€ someday but I still feel so satisfied to have taken her down at all.

barring sekiro/bloodborne of course, I think this is the first time I beat a souls boss without using a shield at all. I’ve never experienced that specific thrill before. feels good.

A tangent I know but I truly love how Bloodborne has exactly one shield and the description says it’s for cowards and it’s unplayably bad on purpose

I guess you could have very different weapons – like a dagger and a polearm – that could use the same Ash and you’d alternate between them rather than dual wield.

It’s good to know hoarfrost is still valid. I’ve probably said this already but I’m usually incredibly against nerfing shit but its original state was so busted that I had no fun using it. I’m looking forward to how they tweak the game going forward, which is a thing I’ve probably never said about any game ever.

yeah and on malenia at least hoarfrost still requires timing and attentiveness to pull off effectively. she’ll dodge it if you just spam it mindlessly… but it’s great to catch the end of her dodges and combos, and create more openings to stunlock her. once you get it to land approaching her is almost always completely safe and you can get a quick combo or leaping strike in
