E3 2021 --- directly into our veins

I remember learning, 6 months before launch, that the timing-based minigame drawn by UI on a separate thread ran anywhere from 200 to 500ms behind the main game on console. It was always fine on PC which was just brute-forcing it.

Engineering’s best response: uh add more messaging to encourage people to switch TV to Game mode. We’ll rewrite the UI for next project

Sounds like what happened in fable 2

The gamification of conversation through match-two game mechanics like this reads to me as very cynical. Signs of the Sojourner depressed me because it felt like all the relationships in it were irreparably harmed by not having the right cards. And the way so many people thought that was the truest representation of conversation in games just killed my soul a bit. If that’s the way people operate then what hope is there for people who feel like they never communicate the right way, or for trying to correct misunderstandings? gah

Thanks for tuning in to Metal Slug, Elden Ring and a 70 minute Merzbow noise performance in between.

maybe this is just why i’m kind of ambivalent about it at this point while everyone else is going bonkers

i was expecting something that felt like a real progression of the concept, or maybe something in my soul really did break when i beat orphan of kos after a week of practice. maybe that’s all that was left for me to do and the journey belongs to someone else now

Having caught up on the trailers I’ve gotta say Elden ring doesn’t really click. It looks pretty well-made and like another souls game.

Maybe because I’m considering quitting action games it doesn’t grab me. We doing more medieval fantasy because we really want to or because that’s what this genre is now?

The trailer makes Elden Ring look like Boss City but I think that’s probably misleading. By definition a huge open-world-ish game you need a horse to traverse is going to have a lot of peaceful moments and curios to discover, I’m looking forward to that side of it.

with the possible exception of souls 3 it’s always been a little silly to try to extrapolate toooo much from a from trailer. i saw a bunch of weirdos and some real sick freaks in there, i don’t know what’s not to love tbh

My enjoyment of Not Dark Souls also hinges on the horse (and maybe the jumping)

i kind of dig the subtle theme of ‘unexpected extra limbs’ in the character designs. trad western fantasy is never a very inspiring setting but i think from has earned some benefit of the doubt re: their ability to actually make that interesting

but then again the grr martin factor is kind of a wildcard. watching the trailer i thought “if game of thrones looked like this i’d probably actually want to see it”

i am expecting it to turn out to be something else, but i am still also just marveling at “let’s collab with the fantasy genre’s preeminent auteur du jour for our new game” and the premise they came up with so far is apparently “there’s a very important ring, and all the knights in the realm want it!”

i wonder if GRRM’s involvement was just doing a berserk book club with miyazaki while they came up with new places limbs could grow from

I wonder why these games feel making their metaphor more explicit helps at all. Card games r already so often functional social metaphors mechanically what do u get out of skinning a 3 of hearts as a 3 of social anxiety or whatever. Closing out the ambiguity feels like more is lost than gained a lot of the time, to me

I’m hyped that Elden is coming out on PS4, but considering Bloodborne is the Star Fox of the system, I’m wondering whether Elden will run at a framerate higher than Slideshow

point being I saw a “blue phantom” in the trailer so I’m wondering if that means co-op, and Bloodborne chugs to a near halt when I summon people
