Yeah, the strength of the writing on these two episodes. They’re really getting confident here.

i began to watch a few days ago and i am enjoying, i have no idea why on netflix (and on the torrent i picked up) the first episode was listed as the four and five.

Webbly got introduced as a Sam Fisher and i just said “ok”

Oh, the broadcast/streaming order and the actual continuity order are all fuckledy different. Upthread you’ll see a discussion about that and Frank Angones’ effort to draw attention to the correct story order.

Looks like season three is already airing out-of-order again, after all this noise and despite efforts to placate the network by organizing the story around broadcast expectations. So… yeah.

Here’s a bonkers thing. Despite its impact and seeming to have lasted forever, DuckTales 1987 actually somehow, bizarrely, only ran for three-and-a-half years, and 100 episodes exactly. Plus a movie.

How long has DuckTales 2017 been running?

Well, it started in summer 2017, right.

And at the end of this season we’ll be at ~75 episodes.

Hmm.

almost all american cartoons from that era only ever got one or two full production orders, and just wound up staggering a lot of the later stuff once they were in syndication

That’s the thing. Nearly all of DuckTales 1987 is one immense honkin’ season for syndication. Later on they made those two direct-to-TV movies (Super DuckTales and… the one with Bubba), then chopped them up into individual episodes and produced a handful more to class them as micro-seasons, that they used to support the Disney Afternoon, once that came around. And then at the very end made four more set after the theatrical movie.

Apparently the writing team is treating Lena’s story as that of a recovering victim of abuse, and that’s gonna factor into the themes of the new season.

Combine that with Donald’s mental health issues, which it looks like they’re still exploring, and this seems like it’s getting interesting.

Christ, I need to make a phone appointment with my therapist or something.

thanks for this, the order on my dowloaded is really messed up

making the rescue rangers basically be secret of nimh was pretty cute

They were meant to be a Rescuers series, so it kinda works out.

Like how TaleSpin was conceived as a DuckTales spin-off (ergo, name) featuring Launchpad. But, stuff.

also just playing their theme music and having them show up and save the day without introduction was an ace move

Apparently it was this whole thing, where they weren’t allowed to use Rescue Rangers due to some kind of a development hell revival that’s been in the works for ages, but they just introduced one element after another, getting them past approval. It was just gonna be a mouse, and they were gonna imagine it was Gadget but never say. And then it ballooned from there. Until it was basically too late, too far into the process, so they just leapt for it and added in all the other contextual elements without full approval and whatever party was managing the team gave a big sigh and consciously turned their back and let them get away with it.

Angones seemed particularly proud of how they stuck to the original show logic that the “humans” (ducks in this case) couldn’t understand with the RRs were saying and only heard squeaks and chatter.

It is neat how casually they’re stirring together all this cosmology. Geography and story elements from Darkwing, leading to unexpected origin story for the Rescue Rangers; the genie from the DuckTales movie leading to a dream of Quack Pack crossing over with Goof Troop, and so on. Except Spoonerville Goofy actually exists; it’s only the 1990s sitcom framing that was fantasy.

is mickey mouse ever going to be anything other than donald’s wilson

That is the biggie. They were told in no uncertain terms that Mickey was an absolute no-go. So the Wilson moment was their little anarchic tweak to that rule. Rescue Rangers was the other thing they asked for but couldn’t get, but… it’s easier to fuck with Gadget than Mickey Mouse.
