Disco Elysium

lmao what

I mean like I would definitely watch it, but… what!?

Disco Elysium is totally the best game of last year and represents a major step forward in adventure game design, but I’m still in full shock that this mordant communist Estonian indie adventure game has been this hugely popular.

I insist that Disco Elysium is 100% an RPG and not an Adventure Game

this is $30 on the epic store now, which means if you bought something on epic last sale and have one of their gimmick coupons left over you can get it for $20. I think that would be its cheapest price yet.

This game is immeasurably sad.

“Full voice acting for everyone” is like the videogame equivalent of a mummy’s curse

other games should instead be putting out disco elysium cuts where they remove all but one or two lines voiced per character to give you an idea of how their personality sounds, if they have to have any voice acting at all

I’m always trying to tell my students that the best way to avoid sounding “low-budget” is to avoid voice acting at all costs

like, forcing players to listen to the most embodied of the encoded sound layers (in a walter murch-esque analysis) just reveals how bad most people are at acting and it is the quickest way to move your game from “hey, I wonder what they’re making here” to “student project”, regardless of how unfair that assessment may be

it’s also the most expensive dev-wise and students doing non-commercial projects don’t realize this until they have to redo an animation because the voice actor misread the line

Sort of pissed off I have to buy this game now regardless of sales or backlog before this fully voice acted monster becomes the only purchasable version

Will we not be able to just turn off voices? Like, there won’t be a volume slider for that or something?

If this is about the other changes too then I understand because maybe they make the game more bloated. I’m on the fence which version I should eventually play but I have a pirated version of the original already so I’ll be fine

You can turn voices off entirely, in the current game. It has a separate volume slider from 0 to Eternity like every other discrete sound.

Ideally there would be option to say NO to all the extra added-on voices leave internal voices like LIMBIC SYSTEM on and mute everyone/everything* else but Cuno.

Ah, I see, I see. I wasn’t aware it already had some voice work. That complicates things.
