are there a bunch of them running around? they never end up on my radar but i don’t go looking
Yeah there are like at least three RPG projects being developed by studios founded by people that were involved with the development of Disco.
There’s Esoteric Ebb, too. That one actually has a demo you can download and play.
jeeze…
whatever. maybe this is actual “iteration” on a good idea instead of, like, simply just reproduction.
yeah
comments are mostly dreck by Non-Elysium Understanders but I had a chuckle at this one, for communist reasons
also a hit on bluesky, some good stuff in the replies

I keep getting ads for Hopetown on instagram, if that’s any indication of anything.
nothing wrong with continuing to use the DE-style twitter-inspired dialogue timeline or visible skill checks with clever names & unique voices but doing both with the same font in the same 3/4 perspective painterly style… yeah. and that writing does it no favors. like Harry is canonically an asshole and can act like such (and get away with it cuz hes a cop) but theres also plenty of room to have him be a sad clown or a friendly eccentric or just plain nuts. all of the visible options in that mockup(?) just read as “you play a douche in this one”
things from Disco Elysium i want to see in other games:
-excellent writing lol
-and setting and plot hook and etc
-skills with distinct “voices”/flavor beyond mechanics
-fail-forward design and overspecializing in a skill having drawbacks
-the whole way white/red checks work
-time progressing when you make new discoveries/open new dialogue
-managing/being managed by a constant partner NPC and building rapport with them
-the ability to equip a grocery bag and collect cans/bottles for tare
-dice rolls & skill checks to manage things that arent combat – or to do “combat” scenarios in a unique story-driven way (thinking about how Measurehead, Evrart Claire, the Hardies at Whirling, the Tribunal etc. are all weirdly like DE’s equivalents to boss fights)
-bleak socio-magical realism shot through with genuine love & compassion for the human condition
-communism
this is all I really want. everything else is just people trying to make complete clones of a game that exists so far removed from anything that would produce that mindset that they are immediately self defeating.
this is the main one for me, communism (the actual beating heart of trying to be one in the modern age) was the root of the game quite clearly, and very few non communists have ever had the range. certainly not some successor studios that may have done nothing but pick up a UI designer off the corpse of ZA/UM, a (lest we forget) anarchist-turned-communist art collective
it’s like someone visited Bread and Puppet and their only understanding of it was “damn we have to make woodcut print posters in primary colors”. like did you read the thing though
anyways yeah since no one is on that level just steal the thought cabinet idea or whatever. just don’t call it a spiritual successor when you leave out the spirit, eh
Three anouncements in a day, not sure what that’s about aside perhaps following Longdue’s initial momentum. Summer Eternal I’m fairly sure are still stuck in legal limbo and Red Till aren’t doing so well either, as I understand things.
too many slices….
citizen sleeper has the writing on the right hand side too and i thought it was pretty decent
it’s a good UI decision imo! iirc one or more of the newer Shadowrun games do it too. it really does feel like a couple of these are banking on “it’s just like the disco elysium you remember” a bit though
ah that’s the vid i was thinking of! cheers babe
