Doom 3 was one of the first games to use a specular highlight map but they preferred really low-resolution textures for it; Half-Life 2, following closely, used much higher-resolution specular maps on things like the Antlions and metallic surfaces, which really helped push the detailed, surface-first look.

where are you all getting those album images?

I’m running them through acpatterns, then using the NookLink part of the Nintendo Switch Online Android app to import them in (you gotta enable NookLink services from the game’s main menu to be able to do it, and you miiiiight have to buy the Pro designer thing from the little ATM machine in Tom Nook’s shop, too, I dunno).
