Death Stranding 🐳

the ones along the edges of the highway are supposed to be floating up like that, yeah. it kind of annoys me. I guess it’s supposed to indicate that they’re experiencing wearing, but it just looks weird to me.

The animated floating rocks near floating highway segments are just there to indicate the highway’s floating thanks to liberal doses of chiralium. Highway wear is shown through the highway’s surface texture (similar to the rust for metal structures). All the floating ground stuff like the 27 minutes mark are just freaky bugs.

I left my game months ago, I wonder if anything is left.

I rode a floating carrier down a ragged mountain side while carrying a giant bomb and didn’t even get an achievement.

Finished this today and oh boy, it really could have used a professional writer.

This simple fact is something I appreciate about Kojima, when it seems like most other game directors who claim to have some cinematic flair would answer a question about what films inspired them by going like

countless…
…lawrence of arabia…
*looks at shelf of criterions*
uh… the works of Fritz Lang…
…The Revenant…

Kojima’s a true cinephile, for what that’s worth.

this kind of makes me imagine him as like a successful version of Gregg Turkington’s ā€œOn Cinemaā€ character

Gregg Turkington called me a creep for looking at him through a window.

Custom Black thread on black Sukajan.

Touring with Deftones rubbed off on them.

all that time just to read 500+ posts in this thread that I can’t relate to at all! how about that! I found the game very moving at many moments. especially the end.

This is a game where every life is sacred, you kill no one, and you ultimately win by unequipping your gun and performing a hug. I thought this was exactly the shit you nerds all wanted. how many years have you all tooted earthbounds horn, now what, this don’t even move the needle? You just can’t win with sb unless you’re a perfectly calibrated amount of detached not too sincere joke thing! You should take a page from this game and stop living in the past of 2008 aloof irony times. though nobody seems to care too much about the game outside the forum either? cowards, all

Sure, the writing can be a little goofy, (mostly it was just bridget/amelie that came off weird in a not working so well way to me while everyone else made it work) but it’s completely transcended ā€œgoodā€ or ā€œbadā€ to me and is some unique only possible in a videogame kojima-space. I hope kojima never tries to write characters that talk or act like actual human beings, and I’m twice as irritated now with every ā€œkojima should just make a movie/wishes he was making moviesā€ comment anyone ever made because he’s clearly more interested in trying to do things that aren’t quite like anything else out there.

A character named Cliff, talking about how ā€œhe was just like any other cliff, a dead end.ā€ played my mads mikkelsen. that’s beautiful, and where the hell else are you going to get something like that.

This is the best thing kojima’s ever made without tomokazu fukushima, and the prologue up to the first voidout, when you still have no clue what is going on in the world of the game, is the best thing kojima has done at all.

the Actual Game part everyone seems to like was alright too. More enjoyable than the metal gear + far cry thing phantom pain was anyway. I enjoyed being terrified of what would happen if I killed someone in the game, or even if I died myself. I’m still not sure what would happen. I lived in fear of the BTs up until I needed chiralium to feed some maintence on my big ass highway I’d built. this happened in the chapter where BB is not with you. I went out to fight them and it turns out they’re completely paper tigers. It took a while to get into an actual fight with them because I kept stealth killing them easily. The extra sounds and noises you hear with BB make them seem way more intimidating than they are and make you freak out. without them it’s easy to just walk up to them. It took me a minute to figure out how to actually start a ā€œbossā€ fight with them. and I like how there’s no way to do that without getting your equipment messed up. There’s no way to fight in this game without it feeling like the result of a ā€œlosingā€ state. but because of this side adventure I knew immediately how to get across the tarpit.

the game part almost felt like a low budget thing at times, for kojima anyway, just one that he couldn’t help himself but keep dumping money into on things like, swinging your arm mechanics for throwing things, sam being able to throw things farther with his right hand, let’s put in zip lines, etc.

I like how for so long it feels uncertain what might happen at any time. That first boss fight at the port with higgs, is completely different than the game you’ve known up til then. same when you get suddenly sucked into a ww1 shooter level. if this were like an ubisoft game or something it’d establish it’s limited rules and mechanics and never deviate from them. everyone would be holograms, you’d never even see the door to one of those shelters surprisingly open and a person comes out and you have to suddenly carry human cargo across a wasteland For Love.

I enjoyed Death Stranding and might even reinstall it but narratively it’s a mess, it doesn’t earn most of its emotional moments and they are largely and obviously cribbed from other places. Worth playing, sure. Gamer canon? No way, except as a chapter in Kojima’s oeuvre.

Yo, I just got this yesterday because I felt like walking around Iceland pretending it was the US. The visuals are breathtaking, in the opening cutscenes and game proper.

The ā€œstoryā€, three hours in, is the dumbest thing I’ve ever come across in any medium. I’m in the camp of people not sure if this is just the worst writing by the worst writer ever or if it’s all an elaborate joke at the player’s expense. It’s hella creative, I give it that, and that’s the main thing that sets it apart from being a forced middle-schooler’s assignment.

I’m not even sure why it exists because it seems the game doesn’t need it. The gameplay is compelling enough to me, I don’t need the dumbfuck story to go with it. The setting is fine, let me have that but don’t force a story about Die-Hardman or whatever down my throat. Just let me loose on this world, on the gameplay mechanics, on smashing that like button when I come across a ladder laid over a river, on walking and balancing my backpack.

I’ll play more and hopefully I’ll get some more hours of enjoyment out of it. It could be the best new AAA game of 2020(/2019)! But by god, I’ll start skipping all cutscenes if the game keeps this up

On the topic of Kojima: I don’t really care if he’s a genius or a buffoon or what he does with the rest of his life in terms of creative output. He made Metal Gear Solid and that game elevated the entire medium of videogames. He’s done that once, he doesn’t need to do it again. It doesn’t matter if he was the driving force and knew exactly what he was doing or if he just got lucky with the people he worked with. It’s like: you were one of the people who made Doom? Enjoy your garage full of Ferraris, enjoy being financially set for life and pursue whatever hobbies or business endeavors you want to for the rest of your life. You can make space rockets or Daikatana, it doesn’t really matter. I’m eternally grateful to you and I guess capitalism rewarded you so at least there’s that
