I would be interested in seeing how much of PT was written/concepted by Kojima versus Del Toro. The surreal dialog feels like Kojima, but itās leaned into so hard that it really works.
The two hardest laughs I have gotten from plot developments in Kojima games have now both involved a thermonuclear weapon as an inventory item.
Got that package earlier this evening too, I wondered if it couldāve been inspired by a similar event in Papers Please. Started chapter 5 now. Iām having a bit of trouble reconciling the new lethal weapons I have with what I know of the general process of death, is it gonna be an instant game over or am I going to have to chuck every poor dead bastard into the lake? Donāt spoil it for me though, I guess Iām gonna find out the catch sooner or later.
just met Heartman in the flesh in the game and it is, indeed, a great set piece.
feeling a little sad as i can sense myself rounding the corner to the finish.
Oh my god the amount of story at the end of this game is the true test of patience. Let me finish your game Kojima!!!
I like what the story does in broad strokes, itās just rather clumsy about it (and sometimes distasteful). He needs to chill on the amount of exposition. Felt like I was watching a Nolan movie by the end, where he has to make sure literally everyone watching āgetsā it.
I really enjoyed this game mechanically and how those mechanics relate thematically to the story. A good editor could have made the rest much more palatable.
i used to feel this way circa MGS4 but now iām excited to listen to people exposit nonsense at me for hours tbh because it feels like a very dumb and soothing dream
like, for example, the stuff with Deadman. (Chapter 8 spoilers)
there are so many more subtle and interesting ways that we could have learned about Samās dead family, but choosing to have Deadman literally tell Sam about Samās own past for the viewer is the dumbest and weirdest choice imaginible. itās just total nonsense; who writes like this? honestly? Paolo Sorrentino. i donāt think itās a coincidence that Kojima made a comment about the French and Italians appreciating his work or whatever lol.
I think modern gamesā stories are mostly exposition because of how cutscenes or conversations are framed as something separate from gameplay. My problem with this game specifically is that I understand the concept in the first couple minutes, but then it keeps going and going and going.
I didnāt mind it too much for most of the game; itās the last 4 or 5 chapters where itās really egregious and isnāt broken up by any meaningful gameplay.
hour 15: whee kojima sure is silly
hour 40: fucking kojima jesus christ get it together
iām not saying youāre wrong iām just saying iām an idiot who thinks dumb things are entertaining
a big part of why i play kojima games is this nexus of Dumb Stuff taking itself seriously, Incredible Technical and Artistic Prowess, and (controversial) he is a pretty good game designer, in that, despite his love for long cutscenes, still knows he has to make the game fun, and i think puts a reasonable consideration into marrying the two usually separate experiences
Itās hard to hate the stupid parts when the game attacked me with an undead oil squid thing that breaks all the rules the game has given me so far in a gnarly surprise boss fight and then made me ditch the bike that got me so far and do a pain in the ass climb down a mountain being unsure of when or if I can replace it to a mellow song while staring out over a lake.
Like that is just lovely mood making. Jeez. I think the frustrating parts of Kojima games are extra frustrating because that sequence was so perfect. Iām still a little jittery from it.
The parts of this video game that you get to actually play are very very good.
yeah the weird on the noseness feels intentional. like idk I feel like this game is actually meant to be lowkey campy. I think kojima understands that videogame writing is kind of inherently campy and has stopped trying to fight that. if he ever was.
apparently there are other porters out there? i misstook a pair for mules while they were on the way to give stuff to the engineer. they were not happy when i bolaād em
i beat it this morning⦠im so glad its finally over and out of my life. this must be what its like to actually like a video game enough to finish it
not that iāve never done that before but this feels good for once. i had my soyface on
