The embargo must have had some prohibition on performance talk because my Canadian boyfriend Linus Tech Tips kept saying “not benchmarking! just talking about ~the experience~”

Yeah no one was allowed to talk about console performance before today and everyone I saw on YouTube stuck to that. Games journalism continues to be a joke

DLSS saves this game’s ass on PC

If I hadn’t gotten a 3000 dollar PC last year so I could do 3D rendering work properly I wouldn’t even bother with this game

my god

the dialogue is so weird and plays so poorly in a trailer because every character is written like they’re a side cutout in an '80s RPG sourcebook and they’re trying to cram personality in the margins

I thought Jackie talked like a Dragon Quest ‘yon Mexico land’ character but he really talks like a 25-year-old Mike Pondsmith trying to be cool. I hear his voice all over this game.

Some of these performances are incredible and it reads clearly and affectingly next to the rest of the game, which is a disastrous tone-crash between “literally an '80s RPG book”, “we can be on HBO! oh wait, no, Showtime” and “more GTA than GTA”. They’re actually succeeding at making these digital puppets warmer than any friendly or loving characters in a prestige drama. This and Death Stranding are jumping over the uncanny valley and finally brute-forcing past it, tech and money have finally been developed in order to represent humans in the worst media ever invented for doing so.

It really is more nostalgia play than anything. It’s got an Ernest Cline’s love for its source material and a similar level of taste in choosing the modern elements to update it: gritty texture! violence made impactful through fidelity, not meaning or narrative support! The billboard and TV commercials are the absolute dregs, loud and crass and unavoidable, and appear to be made by an entirely different team of b-writers fired from Rockstar and I can’t believe the astounding environment art lead didn’t demand they be fired for pasting over their work.

The game constantly bounces between the arch-silly attitude that can sustain a paper RPG and the added cycnical grimdark; starting as a CORPO HEAD my boss with glowing red eyes gives me a mission to kill his boss and it’s self-consciously stupid and goofy and then you hit a mission directed by someone who just watched an episode of True Detective only this world is stupider.

what a thing

(it turns out the state of bugginess is: 3 months early. About average Ubisoft open-world game, people freaking out about it are being performative)

bugginess is one thing but the performance on the 2013 consoles is really rough and they definitely kept it under wraps. was it reasonable to expect they be better? maybe not.

i think it’s reasonable to expect console games to work because that’s the entire value proposition of a console?

like this generation has normalized the idea that some console games will just run bad unless you shell out $400-500 for a new mid-gen upgrade 2 yrs in and i fucking hate it. as someone who wants to spend a little bit of money on hardware every 5-7 years and not have to worry that a game i’m buying will completely shit the bed on it

imo this and the games media’s capitulation to it is an actual consumer rights issue!

yeah i think it’s fair to expect this game to run decently on the consoles it was announced on when these newer consoles didn’t even exist.

but even people reacting to it are being flooded by fans jumping to defend it

As an owner of an original Xbox One whose friends only want to play Xbox, I’m glad my Series X just shipped, despite there being no actual “new” games to play on it.

Basically every game is a blurry hitchy mess at this point. Can’t wait to stop squinting at pixels in Apex.

It’s probably best to compare this to cross-gen games sold on 360/PS3 that really weren’t fully-featured on the previous console, like Titanfall and Shadow of Mordor (missing the Nemesis system!).

It seems to perform better than the bulk of the big releases on 360/PS3 in the last couple years of their life, at least.

To make another comparison, we’ve got tons of darlings that suffer severer technical issues: Deadly Premonition, Nier, pre-Dark Souls From Soft – and there’s still that kid that looks past it and just ignores it and loves it. I played Half-Life 2 on a card below min spec, without hardware transform & lightning. None of the shaders or even baked lights worked and I didn’t care!

They absolutely should not have tried to gag the console performance discussion, of course – it’s a poor technical product on those consoles and even media outlets going along with it and knew what that gag order meant should have been able to convey it to their audience.

I think the mid-gen consoles came about because there wasn’t the will or the tech to move on from a five-year generation (2013-2016/2017) and people wanted to sell TVs.

I don’t think consoles will stop being appliance PCs except for Nintendo’s (I loathe the idea of a “Switch Pro”). I hope that the $300 Xbox actually does maintain parity apart from rendering resolution - running stuff at 1080p is how people budget game on PC graphics and it’s really leveled out for the last five years.

Let us join hands and ask for consistent framerates. :handshake:

Yeah, as a whole, performance on the base consoles has been much, much better late in their life than it was for the 360 and PS3.

I was just thinking the best comparison from the previous transition is probably Skyrim on PS3. They’re bumping up against bandwidth and throughput all over the place.

i’m gonna check out on new stuff until you can actually buy a 3070

seems like a good opportunity to catch up on switch games i’ve missed

100% agree that this fuckin sux, whether there’s precedence for it or not

I’m shocked that hard drive access speed has been the real bottleneck before CPU; these were unbalanced disk speed to RAM size when they launched but it’s not like they’ve magically been growing RAM pools since
